📌 Making up Missed Fasts of Ramadhan in First 9 Days of Dhul-Hijjah

This is a common question upon the tongue or minds of people who missed their Ramadhan fasts and did not make up yet, more specifically the women.

Is it permissible to make up Ramadhan fasts in the first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah?
A related matter is combining the intentions of multiple acts of worship.

🔹 First, understand the concept of Tashreek and then we will see this.

The matter of Tashreek (combining two acts of worship with one intention):

1️⃣Its ruling is that if the two acts fall under the category of means (i.e., means to achieve something else) or are such that they naturally overlap, then it is valid to combine them, and the intended reward of both acts is achieved.

📌 Example:
If someone in a state of major ritual impurity (janābah) performs a ghusl (ritual bath) on Friday with the intention of both removing impurity and performing the Friday ghusl, then his impurity is lifted, and he receives the reward of the Friday ghusl.

2️⃣If one of the two acts of worship is not intended as an independent act (i.e., not intended for its own sake), and the other is, then combining them is valid, and it does not invalidate the worship.

📌 Example:
The Tahiyyat al-Masjid (greeting the mosque) combined with an obligatory or Sunnah prayer.
The Tahiyyat al-Masjid is not an independent goal; rather, its purpose is to occupy the place with prayer, and that is fulfilled.

3️⃣However, if both acts of worship are intended for their own sake —
such as combining the Dhuhr prayer with its regular Sunnah,
or combining a mandatory fast (whether it is a current obligation or a makeup fast, or an expiation or a vowed fast)
with a voluntary fast such as the six days of Shawwal —
then it is not valid to combine them.

This is because each act is an independent act of worship meant to be performed on its own and does not fall under the category of the other.

Thus, fasting the month of Ramadan — and similarly, making up missed days from it — is intended as an act of worship on its own,
and fasting the six days of Shawwal is also intended as an act of worship on its own.

This is because the two together are like fasting the entire year, as authentically reported in the hadith.
Therefore, they cannot be merged with one intention.

🌿 Regarding Making Up Fast in First 9 Days of Dhul-Hijjah

Shaykh Uthaymeen رحمه الله was asked concerning fasting voluntarily when still obligatory fasts (either makeup fasts of Ramadhan or Nadhr fasting) are to be done.

He answered at length, and as a side point mentioned:

"Fasting on a particular day like ‘Arafah or ‘Ashura with the intention of making up an obligatory fast is valid. And if he intends to make up a Ramadan fast on that day, he will receive two rewards: the reward of ‘Arafah or ‘Ashura and the reward for making up Ramadan. This applies to unconnected voluntary fasts, like ‘Ashura or ‘Arafah."

As for the six days of Shawwal, they are directly linked to Ramadan,
and the reward promised in the hadith:

"Whoever fasts Ramadan then follows it with six from Shawwal, it is as if he fasted the entire year"

— is only attained after completing Ramadan.

One who still owes fasts is not considered to have fasted Ramadan until he makes them up.
So if someone fasts the six days before making up Ramadan, he will not receive the full reward.

📚 Majmoo‘ Fataawa Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 20/438

📖 Finally, there is a narration from Umar رضي الله عنه in this regard:

This hadith is mentioned in the book As-Sunan al-Kubra by Al-Bayhaqi – Book of Fasting – Chapter: The Permissibility of Making Up Missed Fasts of Ramadan During the First Nine Days of Dhul-Hijjah:

Hadith 8395 –
Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Hafiz narrated to us,
Abu Nasr Ahmad ibn 'Amr al-'Iraqi informed us,
Sufyan ibn Muhammad al-Jawhari narrated to us,
'Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us,
'Abdullah ibn al-Walid narrated to us,
Sufyan narrated from al-Aswad ibn Qays, from his father, that ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“There are no days more beloved to me in which I would like to make up the missed fasts of Ramadan than the [first] ten days [of Dhul-Hijjah].”

This was also narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah in his Musannaf (6/60), where he said:

Sharik narrated from al-Aswad ibn Qays, from his father, from ‘Umar who said:
“There is no harm in making up [missed] fasts of Ramadan during the [first] ten [days of Dhul-Hijjah].”

✅ The hadith was graded hasan (good) by the editors of Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah,
and it is graded sahih (authentic) by al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari (4/189).

🧾 Conclusion:

In the light of the above, it is recommended for women to fast these 9 days with the intention of making up missed Ramadhan fasts.

These 9 days are like vessels in which any ‘ibaadah done will be rewarded manifold, bi-iznillaah.
Allah is capable of rewarding more than what we can imagine.
