When a Scholar Says "The Stronger Opinion": A Wake-Up Call for Students of Knowledge

🔸In our time, it's common to hear the phrases “this is the rājih (stronger opinion)” or “this is the marjūḥ (weaker opinion)” from scholars and students alike. But what does a scholar actually mean when he says “*this is the rājih*”? Is he speaking on behalf of Allah? Or simply expressing his informed preference?

🔸Let’s unpack this issue that is far more dangerous than it appears on the surface.

Who Decides What’s Rājih?
When a scholar or Shaykh says “the stronger opinion is such-and-such”, does he mean that this is the opinion that is correct in the sight of Allah? Or merely what he himself views as correct based on his study?

The correct understanding: He means it is the stronger opinion according to him.
It is not necessarily the truth as intended by Allah unless revelation is still descending upon him — which, of course, it isn’t. Revelation ended with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Dangerous Implications of Blind Loyalty
The real problem doesn’t begin with the scholars. It starts with some students of knowledge — especially the younger ones — who take their Shaykh’s statement of rājih and inflate it into a divine verdict. They assume: “If my Shaykh said this is the stronger view, then this must be what Allah wants.”

➿This kind of thinking is intellectually and spiritually dangerous.➿

⏹Let’s consider the implications of this belief. If you claim your Shaykh’s opinion is what Allah intends from above the seven heavens, then one of the following must be true:

1️⃣Your Shaykh still receives revelation after the Prophet ﷺ.

2️⃣Your Shaykh is from those who claim, “My heart told me as an inspiration from my Rabb.”

3️⃣Your Shaykh is infallible, like the Imāms of the Shīʿah.

4️⃣Your Shaykh reads directly from the Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ (Preserved Tablet) — line by line!

🔸Any of these would be utter absurdity and spiritual arrogance. And yet, by insisting that your Shaykh’s verdict is the divine truth, this is exactly what you’re implying — whether you realize it or not.

❕Respect ≠ Infallibility
A Shaykh/scholar is free to look into evidences and derive opinions. May Allah reward him. But to claim that his opinion is the absolute truth — that no one can differ from — is pure falsehood and misguidance.

Neither did you (O Muhammad ﷺ) read any book before it (this Quran), nor did you write any book (whatsoever) with your right hand. In that case, indeed, the followers of falsehood might have doubted

— Surah Al-‘Ankabūt, 29:48

⏹The four great Imāms — Abū Ḥanīfah, Mālik, Shāfiʿī, Aḥmad rahimahumullaah — all differed with one another, and not a single one claimed infallibility. Yet today, some elevate their Shaykhs/teachers — people who came at the end of this Ummah — to a status greater than even the Companions.

What happened to humility in seeking knowledge?

A Word to the Fanatics
It’s shocking that some students, not laypeople, are the ones echoing this claim. “Our Shaykh is the one who truly understood the Qur’an and Sunnah,” they say. What about the other scholars? Did they read newspapers and magazines instead of revelation or tawrah and injeel⁉

This elitism breeds sectarianism and intellectual

decay

🔸If your Shaykh studied the evidences and preferred an opinion — great. Take it, follow it. No one will object.

📌But don’t make it a religion.

🔸Don’t impose it upon the Ummah as if your Shaykh is Muhammad ﷺ himself.

⏺Follow, But Don’t Enslave
Yes, follow your Shaykh if you trust him — no issue there. But don’t obligate others to follow him. Don’t reject others who practice contrary to what your Shaykh says — just because he said it.

Because when you do that, you’re not far from the Twelver Shīʿah who declare their imams infallible.

🔸And if you say, “I asked Shaykh So-and-So and he said it’s not allowed,” don’t speak as though you’ve asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

⏹There is a huge difference between revering a scholar and enslaving your intellect to him.
