🔹 SC Quashes Abetment to Suicide Case Against In-Laws

Case: Shenbagavalli & Ors. v. Inspector of Police

A man died by suicide after his in-laws allegedly insulted him by calling him "impotent" during a marital dispute. The Madras HC refused to quash the FIR under Section 306 IPC, prompting an appeal.

The Supreme Court ruled:

🔹No abetment established: Insults alone do not constitute abetment under Sections 306 and 107 IPC.

🔹Mens rea missing: No continuous cruelty or direct instigation shown.

🔹Suicide occurred nearly a month after the alleged insult, with no contact in between.

🔹The suicide note lacked clear evidence of intent or inducement.

📌 Mere use of abusive language, without intent to provoke suicide, does not amount to abetment.

FIR quashed. Proceedings against the in-laws cannot continue.
