On April 22, the Supreme Court flagged concerns about accused persons not getting a fair chance to respond to prosecution evidence—an essential right under Section 313 CrPC (now Section 351 BNSS). Skipping this step makes the trial defective, and fixing it later is nearly impossible.

🧑‍⚖️ A bench of Justices Abhay S. Oka, Pankaj Mittal, and Ahsanuddin Amanullah asked High Courts to verify Section 313 compliance early in appeals. If missing, either record it or send it back to the trial court.

🧑‍⚖️ Supreme Court commutes Reji Kumar’s death sentence to life imprisonment

"Justice is not just about punishment—it’s also about understanding."

On April 22, 2025, the Supreme Court commuted Reji Kumar’s death sentence to life without remission. Convicted of killing his wife and four children, his case was called “rarest of the rare,” yet the Court held that death was not the right punishment.

Reji Kumar spent 16–17 years on death row, showed exemplary behavior in prison, had no prior criminal record, and suffered from severe mental health issues rooted in childhood trauma.

Applying the Manoj v. State of MP (2023) framework, the Court found that despite the gravity of the crime, his reformative potential could not be ignored.

⚖️ The judgment reflects a balance between acknowledging the horror of the act and recognizing the importance of rehabilitation.
