While WhatsApp provided information to CERTIN, a government agency, in May about the hacking of phones using malware through its messaging platform, the communication was in technical jargon without any mention of Pegasus or the extent of the breach, sources say. Responding to allegations over the breach of privacy of several Indian WhatsApp users using (1) surveillance software Pegasus, the Facebook-owned messaging company has said that it remains committed to protecting all messages of its users. In a statement, WhatsApp said, “Our highest priority is the privacy and security of WhatsApp users. In May, we quickly resolved a security issue and notified relevant Indian and international government authorities.
