Chris and Will: The problem with too much Information

Chris: Doc, I had a great time delivering an informative speech yesterday. I was surprised I could stuff so much information into such a little time!πŸ“πŸ“¦

Dr. Will: Did you notice people sleeping or distracted?πŸ›πŸ˜΄

Chris: I did, but I couldn’t understand why.

Dr. Will: though you are expected to gather 75% more information on your subject than you need, it is to select the best and the most appropriate. πŸ’―

'Time limit' tells you the expectation of your audience. No one expects a 1hour worth of information in 10 minutes. ⏱️

The more you say, the less they hear. When informing, focus on value and not volume.

Don’t enjoy yourself at the expense of your audience. πŸ’΅

Action Points
1. Have you ever experienced information overload?

2. How would you determine the most important information to share?

...a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention...

Herbert A. Simon (1916–2001) was an American scholar whose work shaped computer science, economics, and cognitive psychology. He introduced the concepts of bounded rationality and satisficing in decision-making. Simon was a pioneer in artificial intelligence, information processing, and organization theory. He won the Turing Award (1975) and the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences (1978) for his contributions to these fields.

Deep Reflection
I was so stunned by the irony of this quotation that I spent some minutes pondering on it. Imagine how unnecessary wealth can create poverty!

Quotes are profound statements that stir up wisdom in the hearts of the observant.

Facts: No Kidding! Dangers of Infobesity!

1. Information Overload Perception: In a survey, 20% of Americans reported feeling overloaded by information.

2. Effect of Information Overload on Performance: excessive information can weaken performance and increase stress as individuals struggle to process and prioritize the data they receive.

3. Information Overload and Audience Engagement: Presenters often include too much information in their presentations, which overwhelms and confuses the audience.

4. Information Overload in Presentations: Information overload is considered the biggest issue in presentations today.

Anywhere But Here!

DEVELOPING THE DEVELOPER
Have you ever felt tired of your current position? Do you ever desire a new level so much that you almost can’t stand where you are now?

The first step to a change of level is dissatisfaction with the present. You must become uncomfortable with where you are to move to where you need to be. But where is that place?

Today, I am sharing with you an article that will challenge you to define your destination.

Chris and Will: Who Are These People?

Chris: Doc, I was invited to speak on β€œTime Management”. But to my surprise, I found myself speaking to a group of retirees! How do you speak on time to people who have already spent most of their time?⏰

Dr. Will: So, what did you do?

Chris: I delivered my speech just as I prepared it. 🎯

Dr. Will: I see you suffer from Audience Ignorance Infection.🩺

When speaking, be more interested in knowing your audience than focusing on the topic. The audience must always determine the content and approach. A great content delivered to the wrong audience is a bullet misfired. πŸ”«

And if you ever find that you assessed your audience incorrectly, you must be dynamic enough to adapt your content to the current reality. Speak to the audience present and not the audience planned. You are not a slave to your intentions if you can serve the people you can see. 🍽

Action Points
1. Have you ever seen a speaker address the wrong audience?
2. How would your speech if necessary?

And the most successful people are those who accept, and adapt to constant change. This adaptability requires a degree of flexibility and humility most people can’t manage.

Paul Lutus is a scientist, engineer, and programmer with a remarkable career spanning space and technology. He designed spacecraft components for the NASA Space Shuttle and developed a solar system model for the Viking Mars mission. Later, he shifted to computer science and became a pioneer in personal computing, creating Apple Writer, a widely popular word processing program for early Apple computers.

Deep Reflection
A rigid speaker is faithful to the script but faithless to the people.
Be humble enough to let your audience teach you how to influence them.

Chris and Will: Information Misfire?

Chris: Doc, the organisers of my last event said I misled the audience. 😬

Dr. Will: So, did you?

Chris: I wanted to impress them with statistics and amazing figures, but I had no time to confirm the sources. πŸ“Š

Dr. Will: I see you suffer from Misinformatitis.

Presenting inaccurate or unverified information is one of the fastest ways to lose credibility. Eloquence is useless if you cannot be trusted. The excitement of a great speech dies immediately when the audience realises they have been flying on a plane of smoke. ✈️

Using unverified information is selfish because you focus on your β€œperformance” instead of creating a lasting impact. Resist the temptation to add what you cannot defend. Don’t even make up personal stories to impress people. Your words are as strong as your values.

Action Points
1. What would you do if you found out that your favourite speaker was not credible?

Data is like garbage. You’d better know what you are going to do with it before you collect it.

Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835–1910), was a celebrated American writer and humorist. Often called the "greatest humorist" in U.S. history, he was also hailed by William Faulkner as "the father of American literature." His most famous works include The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), capturing the spirit of childhood and adventure.

Unprocessed data, like garbage, is dangerous. Unapplicable information is also as dangerous.

Chris and Will: Sudden Death!

Chris: Doc, when I concluded my speech this morning, I only got a stare. 😳

Dr. Will: How did you end it?

Chris: I didn’t. Time was up so I just stopped. πŸ›‘

Dr. Will: I see you suffer from Conclusivitis Abrupta.
Imagine a speech as a hot-air balloon that rises gradually in the sky. If you puncture the balloon, the air escapes, and the craft drops like a stone. Never let your audience drop suddenly. Gradual descent equals safe landing. Only those who enjoy the landing can cheer the pilot. πŸ›©

Plan your speech with the end in mind. Manage your time well to avoid pressure. Concluding with a clear summary or key takeaways will help your audience appreciate the lessons learnt. The beginning of a speech may be enjoyable, but its end must be memorable. πŸ–

Action Points
1. Have you ever ended your presentation abruptly?
2. Mention the name of a public speaker who concludes powerfully.

If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.

Orson Welles (1915–1985) was a groundbreaking director, actor, writer, and producer known for his bold innovations in film, radio, and theater. By age 21, he was directing major stage productions in New York. His first film, Citizen Kane (1941), is widely regarded as the greatest film ever made, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential filmmakers of all time.

Deep Reflection
The only good story is the story that is concluded. An incomplete story leaves much to be desired. Public speaking is storytelling.

5 Transformational Elements of Potential

DEVELOPING THE DEVELOPER

If there is anything that is more frustrating than thinking you have no special gift, it is having so many gifts yet you are not able to make much out of them.

The power of recognition is one of the most significant attributes of success. Recognition is the ability to appreciate the value of what you have and know what to do with it.

Today, I am sharing with you a podcast on critical elements that if you understand them, your potentials will be actualised.

Hello Dear Friends,

We all know that one of the greatest attributes of an effective public speaker is passion. Unless you are passionate about your subject, how can you stir up excitement in your listeners? Your desire is always to make them feel, by the end of your speech, what you felt at the beginning of that speech. There must be communication and transmission of purpose.

But is there anything like passion gone overboard? Can passion be so much that it derails the substance of a speech?

I want you to check out this 5-minute video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPIvwu-573Y&list=PLlhhbyPZp-bS-i2jlZj8msTHEqWJed1tr

Let me know what you think.

Also, aside from the passion, what else do you think about it?

The Power of Practice

In the school of mastery, practice is indispensable.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, practice is:
The actual application or use of an idea, belief, or method, as opposed to theories relating to it.

It is good to know that you believe you know what you know, BUT the ONLY way to know you know it is through demonstration.

Reading all the books you can lay your hands on about swimming doesn’t make you float in waterπŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ; practice does.

Reading about driving doesn’t make you a driver🚘; practice does. And please, let’s not even talk about flying a planeβœˆοΈπŸ›©!

So, you have learnt a lot about public speaking, read books, and watched professional speakers, BUT you have not practiced???😳😯
