Chris: Doc, I had a great time delivering an informative speech yesterday. I was surprised I could stuff so much information into such a little time!📝📦

Dr. Will: Did you notice people sleeping or distracted?🛏😴

Chris: I did, but I couldn’t understand why.

Dr. Will: though you are expected to gather 75% more information on your subject than you need, it is to select the best and the most appropriate. 💯

'Time limit' tells you the expectation of your audience. No one expects a 1hour worth of information in 10 minutes. ⏱️

The more you say, the less they hear. When informing, focus on value and not volume.

Don’t enjoy yourself at the expense of your audience. 💵

Chris: Doc, I was invited to speak on “Time Management”. But to my surprise, I found myself speaking to a group of retirees! How do you speak on time to people who have already spent most of their time?⏰

Dr. Will: So, what did you do?

Chris: I delivered my speech just as I prepared it. 🎯

Dr. Will: I see you suffer from Audience Ignorance Infection.🩺

When speaking, be more interested in knowing your audience than focusing on the topic. The audience must always determine the content and approach. A great content delivered to the wrong audience is a bullet misfired. 🔫

And if you ever find that you assessed your audience incorrectly, you must be dynamic enough to adapt your content to the current reality. Speak to the audience present and not the audience planned. You are not a slave to your intentions if you can serve the people you can see. 🍽

Dr. Will: So, did you?

Chris: I wanted to impress them with statistics and amazing figures, but I had no time to confirm the sources. 📊

Dr. Will: I see you suffer from Misinformatitis.

Presenting inaccurate or unverified information is one of the fastest ways to lose credibility. Eloquence is useless if you cannot be trusted. The excitement of a great speech dies immediately when the audience realises they have been flying on a plane of smoke. ✈️

Using unverified information is selfish because you focus on your “performance” instead of creating a lasting impact. Resist the temptation to add what you cannot defend. Don’t even make up personal stories to impress people. Your words are as strong as your values.

Imagine a speech as a hot-air balloon that rises gradually in the sky. If you puncture the balloon, the air escapes, and the craft drops like a stone. Never let your audience drop suddenly. Gradual descent equals safe landing. Only those who enjoy the landing can cheer the pilot. 🛩

Plan your speech with the end in mind. Manage your time well to avoid pressure. Concluding with a clear summary or key takeaways will help your audience appreciate the lessons learnt. The beginning of a speech may be enjoyable, but its end must be memorable. 🏖

We all know that one of the greatest attributes of an effective public speaker is passion. Unless you are passionate about your subject, how can you stir up excitement in your listeners? Your desire is always to make them feel, by the end of your speech, what you felt at the beginning of that speech. There must be communication and transmission of purpose.
