Chris and Will: Avoiding Eye Contact

Chris: Doc, I am terrified to look at people's faces! 🫣

Dr. Will: I see you have Eye Contact Deficiency.🩺

You tend to look everywhere but at your audience.

When you look over their heads, they feel you consider them invisible. πŸ«₯

When you distract yourself with your presentation, they feel you are talking to yourself.πŸ₯±

When you play with any object you are holding, they believe you are nervous. 😩

Not making eye contact disconnect you from your audience. If you want to avoid them, why speak to them?

It can also be problematic in conversations by making you appear less confident.

Eye contact opens an invaluable channel between you and your audience. You see their needs and they see your passion. When people feel seen, they feel special; and when they feel special, they listen. πŸ₯°

Action Points
1. Have you ever avoid eye contact?

Focus and Drive? Ask the Ants!

DEVELOPING THE DEVELOPER

Everyone wants to be associated with a truly wise person. But what happens when you meet the TEACHER of your wise mentor?

Imagine the wisest king who lived, claiming he had a teacher! Ok, now we are curious, so we ask him, β€œShow us your teacher”, and then he points down at the floor. Confused, we look down and up at his face, β€œthere is nothing there”, we tell him. But he says, β€œOh yes, there is. And you have ignored it all your life- it is the Ant!”

Solomon learned a few things from the ants: if we are wise, we will, too.

We can't reach our fullest potential without drive and focus. Great to have the experts on that subject in the house today- Ants.

Take a peak at what Solomon discovered.

Chris and Will: How to Your Get Eye Contact Right

Chris: Doc, I really need to stop distracting my audience with shifty gaze.😳

Dr. Will: I will place you on a daily dose of GAZEmax.πŸ’‰πŸ’Š

Note that eye contact is not staring. It is a β€œTouch and Go” connection. When you stare, people feel uncomfortable. Unless you are answering a direct question, 3-5 seconds at a time is appropriate. πŸ‘

In a continuous conversation, look away, and reconnect.πŸ‘€

When addressing a group, distribute your gaze by looking from side-middle-side, and front-middle-back. Don’t leave any section uncovered.πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦

Establish confidence by beginning with friendly faces, and as you become more comfortable, extend to others.

Practice with a mirror or your friends. πŸͺž

Chris and Will: Repetition Problem

Chris: Doc, you know, I find myself repeating myself, you know. And, you know, that can be a problem when speaking. πŸ₯Ί

Dr. Will: If I didn’t know, now I do!!! I see you have Repetitive Content Fatigue. πŸ©ΊπŸ”¬

Some people repeat phrases as a filler to bridge statements. Some others do out of nervousness. Repetition can distract your audience unless it is a deliberate technique. 🚧

When you believe you have a very good point, you may over-stretch it by repeating it too many times. Or, you may not have enough content to fill the time allotted to your speech, so you keep going over the little you have.

When your audience stops hearing value, they stop listening. Fresh thoughts keep attention fresh.πŸ’―

Repetition of the same thought or physical action develops into a habit which, repeated frequently enough, becomes an automatic reflex.

Norman Vincent Peale was a prominent American Protestant clergyman, a pioneering author in the field of positive thinking. Best known for his influential book, The Power of Positive Thinking (1952), Peale’s work has inspired millions worldwide to embrace optimism and self-belief. Through his radio and television presentations, Peale reached a wide audience, spreading his message of positivity and faith.

Key Takeaway
1. Repetition breeds habit and habit cannot be hidden.
2. If you can't control yourself without the audience, you can't control yourself before them either.

Facts: No Kidding! Dangers of Over-repetition

1. Audience Annoyance: Overusing repetition can irritate the audience. Studies suggest that up to 30% of listeners may find excessive repetition annoying, leading to disengagement. 😑

2. Perceived Patronization: Repeating the same points too often can make the speaker seem patronizing as if they are underestimating the audience’s ability to understand the message. πŸ˜”

3. Loss of Engagement: Approximately 25% of audience members might tune out if they feel the content is redundant.πŸ“΅ πŸ”‡

4. Reduced Impact: Over-repetition can dilute the impact of the message. Instead of reinforcing the point, it can make it seem less significant or even boring.😴

5. Cognitive Overload: For complex topics, excessive repetition without clear structure can overwhelm the audience, making it harder for them to follow and retain the information.🀯

The Power of Contrast

DEVELOPING THE DEVELOPER

It feels good to belong, be part of a group, and be accepted. It’s nice not to stick out and be conspicuous. Doing what every other person is doing is safe. We easily blend in. It also helps us to walk a path that others have walked.

But what happens if conforming makes us a copy instead of an original? What happens when we constantly compare ourselves to others just to feel better?

Today, we will learn that contrast is not a bad thing. In fact, if used well, its result will set us apart.
