I Don’t Need Public Speaking

Chris: Doc, I don’t need public speaking. I’m an introvert and I don’t want to make a fool of myself in front of an audience.😱

Dr. Will: I see that you have Speaking Ignorance Condition (SIC) and Audience Aversion Disorder (AAD)🩺

Speaking begins from your mind by coordinating your thoughts in a way that other people can understand you without confusion. Everyone is capable of valuable thoughts.

Imagine sharing your thoughts in class, the boardroom, family gatherings, or team meetings poorly! 😳

The quality of thought is measured by the quality of words.

DEVELOPING THE DEVELOPER

A public speaker is like a fountain from which water flows. The quality of the source determines the freshness of the water. My counsel over the years has remained that we must always give out of the overflow of our lives and not out of the reserve. 🌨🌨🌨

This means that our first responsibility is to develop ourselves, and this overflows into the lives of others.πŸ‹πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

Don’t forget that:
β€œβ€¦ for out of the abundance (overflow) of the heart the mouth speaks.”

Chris and Will: Why Your Career Can’t Be Public Speaking

Chris: Doc, I’ve found what I want to do for life, it is public speaking🎀

Dr. Will: I can see that you have Priorititis, an inability to focus on what is most important. 🩺

Public speaking is a channel. There is no great speaker without a great message.πŸ’―

Your message is what you have found, that has worked for you, and that others need.πŸ“‘

What drives you is not the desire to speak but people’s need to hear.πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦

You must be very busy proving that your message works by practicing it. Then, your results will ensure that you never lack an invitation to speak. The most successful speakers are those with proofs. πŸ†

If you spend your time chasing speaking opportunities, you are not busy doing the deed!β˜‘οΈ

1. What message do you want to share with your audience?🎺

Plato was an ancient Greek philosopher from the Classical period, regarded as a foundational figure in Western philosophy and a pioneer of the written dialogue and dialectic forms. His work laid the groundwork for key areas of both theoretical and practical philosophy.

Chris and Will: Dangers of Talking A Lot

Chris: Doc, people say I talk too much so I should become a speaker!πŸ—£

Dr. Will: I see you have Talkativities, the tendency to talk all the time.πŸ©ΊπŸ”¬

While the desire to talk a lot may show self-confidence, You may

1. Listen less: listening is a strong attribute of a speaker. It is priceless in connecting with your audience.πŸ‘‚

2. Like the β€œsound of your voice”: you will still be speaking when your audience is done listening.πŸ₯±

3. Accept every invitation to speak: wise speakers must speak only in their area of authority.β˜ŽοΈβœ‰οΈ

Extremes are incompatible with public speaking. When you are too silent, your audience forget you exist because you are losing your relevance. And when you talk too much, they tune off, because they need a break.

Facts: No Kidding! What Happens When You Talk Too Much?

1. Information Overload: 50% of the information presented in a speech is forgotten within an hour, and 90% within a week. Overloading the audience with too much information can worsen this issue. (University of Kansas) 🀯

2. Audience Engagement: the average human attention span has decreased from 12 seconds in 2000 to 8 seconds in 2013. This means that speakers need to be concise and engaging to keep their audience’s attention. (National Center for Biotechnology Information- NCBI)😴

3. Fear of Public Speaking: a lot of individuals experience some degree of anxiety or nervousness when public speaking. This anxiety can lead to over-talking as a coping mechanism (greatercollinwood.org)😨😬

What can you do to avoid the issues above?

Good Speaker or Great Speaker; Your Choice!

DEVELOPING THE DEVELOPER

Sometimes we settle for good enough when we can be outstanding.

As public speakers, ours is a responsibility to create a memorable experience that would worth the time of our audience. They don’t listen out of pity for us, they listen because they need us to impact them.

How do we move from good to great?πŸ€”

Chris and Will: Fear of Public Speaking

Chris: Doc, when I stand before people to speak, my palms sweat, and my knees shake. In fact, my heart beats so fast that my mind goes blank.😱🫣

Dr. Will: I see you have Stage Fright FeverπŸ₯΅. At its mildest level, people make unnecessary mistakes, and at its critical level, people forgo valuable opportunities due to fear.πŸ©ΊπŸ”¬

Let’s demystify the fear of public speaking.

Fear of speaking is a killer of potentials. No matter how gifted we are, we tend to underperform under fear.😰

It shifts our attention from our capacity to our perceived flaws. πŸ§πŸ”¦

Research says we are only born with 2 fears- the fear of falling or of a loud sound. Every other fear, we learnt. Our fear of speaking came from our experience or observation. πŸ“Š

If you learnt it, you can unlearn it!πŸ’―πŸ•Ί
