βΎοΈ Reading Checkers is a fantastic game for those who are learning to read!
The file is editable, so you can type in letters, syllables, phonics, CVC words or silent E words. If children have trouble remembering numbers, you can also include them.
Great for fast finishers as well as a useful way to productively spend a couple of minutes at the end of a lesson.
π How to play:
- Just like regular checkers. To make a move a player must correctly read the word in the square they are moving to. If they make a mistake, the turn passes to the other player. In this case, the children will be exceptionally attentive to each other!
- π₯ In larger groups, you can prepare several boards with different content. Divide the children into pairs and organize a checkers championship (In smaller groups, you can play one pair against another or have one strong student play against two weaker ones πͺ).

π΅οΈββοΈ There's a tricky mistake in every sentence. Students need to read carefully, find it, and correct it. It might be a grammar or vocabulary error.
You can cut the paper into cards or use the whole pages as worksheets.
βοΈ The task is excellent for fast finishers and, moreover, it will help to use the remaining few minutes at the end of the lesson productively.
Finding these mistakes is not just a review of what they've learned but also teaches them to notice and correct their own little typos in the future.

π§― Brave firefighters must rescue a girl from a burning house.
It is a dynamic and exciting game for practicing various topics:
- reading CVC words
- reading silent E
- reading phonics
- irregular verbs
- telling the time
- opposites
How to play:
Divide the students into pairs or mini-groups.
Players take turns. If the students' level differs, it's better that the stronger ones start the game. To reach the attic, players must complete a task (correctly read the words, tell the time, call the forms of irregular verbs (2nd, 3rd, or both), or opposites).
Option 1. Start the timer at the beginning and stop it when a player reaches the girl. Write down the results. Then the other firefighters try their luck. The player, who reaches the top faster than the others, wins the game. If a player makes a mistake or doesn't know the answer, they can skip the word and continue, but 2 penalty seconds are added to their total time.

Seems like a simple task, but so beneficial!
Ask your students to:
βοΈ Write as many sentences as they can using these words (then they can share and check each other's sentences).
βοΈ Create a sentence in one minute using as many words from the list as possible. The longest and most correct sentence wins.
βοΈ Make only negative sentences or questions (for the latter, students can ask each other the questions and answer them).
βοΈ Compose sentences in the necessary tense (the students can change verb forms to make it easier).
βοΈ Make a short story using as many words from the list as possible.
βοΈ This task can also be assigned as homework.
