The kanji 留 has the meaning of "detain, fasten, halt, stop". You might recognize it from the vocabulary word 留学生 (りゅうがくせい) which means "foriegn exchange student". It also appears in words like 停留所 (ていりゅうじょ) "bus stop", 留守番 (るすばん) "care-taking, house-sitting" 拘留 (こうりゅう) "detention, custody" and 留め金 (とめがね) "clasp or fastener"

It is also used in an alternative way to write the verb pair 止まる (とめる) "to stop (something)" and 止まる (とまる) "to come to a stop". It gets used in a number of compound verbs, like 気に留める (きにとめる) "to keep in mind".

The verb 留める (とどめる) means "to stop; to stay (e.g. the night); to cease; to put an end to; to contain; to keep (in position, in place); to limit" and can also be used for "to record" or "to retain".

So 書き留める means "to put on record" or "to write down". It has the nuance of securing something in writing which is why it is used to describe taking notes for a class.

ござる is an honorific way of saying ある/いる, 行く and 来る.
According to a dictionary, it had been used until the Edo period (a few hundred
years ago), so it sounds archaic.
But now いらっしゃる or おいでになる is commonly used for いる/行く/来る instead and ござる is not used anymore except for anime, manga or Japanese historical dramas set in medieval Japan.
