One thing we have learned over the years is nerds hate ads. Nerds will fight you to death over ads.

We say this because it's been announced EA games will soon begin putting ads inside of their video games.

>driver of growth

what the fuck "growth" do you need? EA is among the largest game studios out there, they own the largest sportsball/niggerball IPs out there, and they're saying they need ADS in their games? why?

this is blatant greed, or a last ditch attempt to save a dying company (unlikely imo). there's no way EA is in such dire straits that they need to be using ads for revenue. this is just a greedy, jeet-style double dip so they can generate passive income from their shitty niggerball games. now they can make it just like the teevee sports with ads overflowing the entire show.

this trend needs to stop. advertisements are an invasion of a user's space for money, plain and simple. i understand that advertisements are a great way for companies to keep money coming through the door, and that's great, and to be honest i don't have a problem with it and never have. it just needs to be done in a way that prioritizes user experience over sheer revenue.

i'll give some examples.
>how to do it wrong
youtube, most online streaming tv services, amazon prime: for video streaming, these are the worst of the worst. youtube is famous for stacking up as many ads as it can, sometimes as much as multiple minutes of advertisements for a video that may only be 15 or so minutes long. amazon prime is a paid subscription that includes video, but just recently, they started double dipping for a prime video subscription to remove ads. so, you need basic prime and prime video to get a service you already had for free. they *chose* to re-enable ads across the whole service, and then began charging for ad removal. the best part? they've had "freevee" for a long time, which as far as i know was totally ad-supported. you could still buy copies of most media on freevee, or watch it free with ads.

as for games, *all* mobile/gachashitter games that i've played (admittedly not many) are loaded with ads. there's ads when you open the app, when you start a game, when you end a game, during loading screens, there are usually ad panels somewhere in menus, it's awful. some of them hold you hostage with a subscription, some of them offer "premium" to remove ads permanently (very based one-time-purchase model).

>how to do it right
rumble, bitchute, and twitch either have few ads or let you directly support the people you like to remove ads. twitch also allows control over how many ads are shown, down to a bare minimum, and allows streamers to remove ads entirely for users who subscribe. i've never once seen an ad on bitchute, nowhere, and i do see a donation button which leads me to believe they operate the same way.

for games, splitgate in particular has a great model. they allow for progression free, but you can also pay for a battle pass to get things faster. and online currency of course. they do not, however, have any ads whatsoever. zero. they're subsidized solely by battle pass and currency purchases.

so yeah, i'm not full-on "fuck ads", but there's a right and wrong way to do it. either circumvent it entirely by allowing for very cheap subscriptions or allow people to pay to clean them up permanently with a purchase.
