Inference type of question

Infer – deduce or conclude (something) from evidence rather than from explicit statements.

Don’t choose the answer choice that is clearly, black-and-white, stated in the passage

Choose the choices that is answering the question ‘What would the author say if he had an opportunity?’ In other words, if the passage states that ‘the author loves black clothes’, we have to choose the answer choice ‘the author is in favor of white clothes’

How about going over the tips to ace the listening section?

🤔 Spend 20 second to summarize

- restate the main points in 2-3 sentences. It will certainly help you with the ‘Main Idea’ questions & sometimes you may be able to guess the correct choice with the help of common sense and logic.

🚫 No sentences on your notes

- never ever write anything that looks like a sentence as you make notes since it will only take your time. What you need to do is to put down only single words (verb + subject in cases) that will make sense to you as you try to recall the information. Don’t forget that this is a listening part not writing! You are required to listen and make notes the same way you would do that on your classes.

✏️ Subtitles are sometimes helpful

-
if you do your listenings from the yt, use the subtitles sometimes since it will definitely facilitate your understanding of pronunciation (subtitles downloader & the post with yt channel recommendations for the listening).

😛Here we go with the Vocabulary Type of Question. In this task, you are required to find the synonym to the highlighted word. Two things to keep in mind:

1. The words can change their meanings according to the context. So, even if you are very confident in your choice, don’t be lazy to come back to the passage and check your answer in that context.

2. You might need to learn some new academic (which is not widespread beyond universities, schools, books, and so in) vocabulary for this type of question; thus, take my advice of using Quizlet, flashcards, chatgpt to create exercises with that new vocab, come back to the vocab questions you screwed up and complete them one more time.

Below, there are the files to practice your vocab ↓

How to use em?
15 min per day for that file is the best work with your vocab for the exam.

Tips for Prose Summary Type

1. Eliminate examples:

Examples simply follow the thesis statements, so that the readers, who didn’t get it the first time, will also be able to grasp it. They are not the main ideas! The answer choices with the main ideas (in other words, main ideas = the right answers) will contain the information from the sentence before the example.

2. Facts first:

Before searching for main ideas, check whether the answer choices are correct. Not only you have to choose the main over minor ideas, make sure that you also filter your choices based on «stated/ not stated». By checking trues first, you’ll get rid of false answers, and spend less time examining major ideas.

3. Use (+), (?), (-) to help yourself sort the answers:

(+) is when you are confident in an answer choice,
(?) is when you need to come back to the text to check whether it works or not,
(-) is when you can certainly say that it’s not the right answer

👍 Sentence Simplification

Spend 30-50 seconds to read the sentence that you have to simplify:

In this type of question, they precisely choose the sentences with many subordinating conjunctions (parts of sentences that start with because, although, if, so, and so in), so it is easier for test takers to get confused and become lost

Thus, thoroughly read the sentence, and only after you 100% understood the meaning, go to the answer choices

Let’s pretend I don’t know the meaning of “coincide with”. BUT, as I knew form the previous post,

co-, com-, con-, col- = together, with (page 2 here)

The only answer choice here that means “together” is B, which is, in fact, the right answer choice🙂

Rhetorical type of question

To determine the reasons to include examples, simply look at the sentence above:

If there is name of species/ title of a picture/ country/ year, and so on in the question, the probability that you should explain why the author includes the example is freaking high.

So, if you determined that you need to answer why the author inserted that example, do the following:

1. Read the sentence with the example,

2. Read the sentence above which contains the thesis statement (the idea that author wants to illustrate more explicitly),

3. Find the answer choice that includes the info from the thesis statement.
