sriman nAthamunigal was Born in veera nArAyaNa puram to Ishvara bhattAzhwAr. He is also known as sri ranganAtha muni and nAtha brahmar. He was an expert in ashtAnga yOgam and divine sangeetham. Also, he is the one who established the arayar sEvai which is still observed in thiruvarangam, AzhwAr thirunagari, srivilliputhUr, etc.

Just like nammAzhwAr is blessed by emperumAn with divine knowledge, nAthamunigaL is blessed by nammAzhwAr with the same divine knowledge. This is what mAmunigaL says in upadhEsa rathina mAlai – aruL peRRa nAtha muni (அருள் பெற்ற நாதமுனி).

On Aani Thirumoolam day, on the occassion of saatrumurai (final day) of the upanyaasam series of Eedu vyaakyaanam of Nampillai, NamperumaaL took the form of a small boy named aranganaayakam, came in front of maamunigal and presented the following thanian (as a sishya would do for an acharya).

*yathIndra pravaNam vandhE ramya jaamaataram munim*

Here, emperumaan says "I worship azhagiya manavaala maamuni who
a) is the holder of the mercy of Thiruvaaimozhipillai,
b) is an ocean of jnaanam, bhakthi, vairaagyam,etc and
c) has boundless love for emperumaanaar".
