We've asked Inbal Rief (@balcooly on twitter) for advice how to become more popular and to gain more opportunities to participate in interesting dataviz projects. Here's her advice:
Hi!
So, I have 3 main points to share with you -
1, Leverage your Social Media + Network
Be super active. Look for related groups/meetups (like DVS) that you can join where you can share your thoughts + expertise with others. It will draw the attention of potential clients who will eventually reach out to you outside of those groups.
The best projects I’ve gotten were the result of leads from my network. Try to establish a reputation as a team who knows their stuff.
2, Start a blog.
Not only it provides an opportunity to share your knowledge + advice, but it also defines you as an expert/an authority in the eyes of your target audience. By creating consistent and valuable posts, you will eventually become the go-to person for their questions and requirements.
Focus on creating blog posts that are logical, structured well, straight-to-the-point and easy-to-read (beautiful too!). This is more valuable than a website.
Not easy I know 🙂, but really worth-while!
3, Work on Open Source + Side Projects + Collaborations
It will help you improve your skills and enrich your portfolio as well. Try to collaborate as much as you can, it adds a major value & volume to your portfolio. Of course, always have an updated one!
Jolly luck!

The animated map of obesity
for @rationalnumbers
Font weight shows the percent of population with BMI over 25 kg/m²
Data is age-standardised. More about methodology.
Firstly, we wanted to make an interactive version, but variable font in SVG worked extremely slow on Chrome and didn't work on Firefox at all. So we decided on making screenshots and compiling a video instead.

The tile grid map we've used is a slightly modifyed version of this Richard Brath's map:
In case you want to make your own world tile grid map, here are files you need:

p5js graphics library
Some dataviz ideas can be easily tested with p5js.org javascript library instead of famous d3. P5 is more of a tool for generative design and creative coding, so this library is designed as simple as possible, so even artists could cope with it.
Here are some experiments, that I've made using P5:
