Choeung Ek serves as a powerful memorial to thousands of victims executed by the Khmer Rouge, many of whom were transferred from the infamous S-21 prison, with the site commemorated following Cambodia's liberation in 1979

The Choeung Ek Genocidal Centre, also known as The Killing Fields, serves as a memorial to the Cambodians killed there during the Khmer Rouge regime. It features a haunting large memorial stupa containing many victims’ skulls and is located 15 kilometres southwest of Phnom Penh.

The site lies just outside of the urban fringe in Dang Kao district, but falls within the jurisdiction of the municipal authority of Phnom Penh.
