“Do not cast away your sickle¹, but rather give them sickles…”

It is mentioned in Ṣayd al-Khāṭir by Ibn al-Jawzī (p. 336):
“1054. I saw some of the people saying: ‘I have thrown my sickle among the harvesters and have gone to sleep!’ Then he would indulge in matters that are impermissible. So I reflected: and realized that the knowledge they possess, which is only forms of words by which they know what is lawful and unlawful, is not true knowledge. True beneficial knowledge is the understanding of fundamentals, the knowledge of the Creator and His greatness and what is His due, the study of the life of the Messenger ﷺ and his Companions, refining oneself with their manners, and understanding what has been transmitted from them. That is the knowledge which causes the greatest of scholars to see himself as smaller than the most ignorant of the ignorant.”

I say: The book Ṣayd al-Khāṭir contains philosophical and theological issues², despite its many benefits, that make us advise beginners to avoid it. This was also the view of Shaykh al-Sa'dī, as found in his Fatāwā.

This passage, however, is overall a fine point and requires clarification.

Ibn al-Jawzī is speaking about scholars of his time who neither acted [upon their knowledge] nor strove, being deluded by the knowledge they carried. One of them would say: “I threw my sickle among the harvesters and slept,” meaning: since I taught people knowledge, I will still get the reward. This meaning in itself is true. But the corruption lies in that he was certain of reward for himself, and took it as a reason for laziness in action and boldness upon sins.

Knowledge is indeed one of the means for forgiveness of sins, for the one who teaches people goodness is prayed for by all creatures in the heavens and the earth, even the fish in the sea.

Yet no human being is free of sins and shortcomings, even those with vast knowledge. A person does not benefit fully from people’s prayers for him until he benefits himself first.

Evidence for this is the Companion who asked the Prophet ﷺ for his companionship in Paradise. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: “Then assist me over yourself by abundant prostration.”

So there had to be personal effort and action. If only those who attach themselves to the dead, those carried away to shirk thereby, as well as the arrogant and self-deluded, understood this, they would leave what they are upon.

Reflect also on the state of 'Abdullāh bin Umar in this narration:

Al-Bukhārī said in his Ṣaḥīḥ (no. 1639):
“Ya'qūb bin Ibrāhīm narrated to us, Ibn 'Ulayyah narrated to us, from Ayyūb, from Nāfi', that Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) entered his son 'Abdullāh bin 'Abdullāh, with his back in the house, and said: ‘I fear that this year there will be fighting among the people, and they will prevent you from the House, so why not stay back?’ He replied: ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out, but the disbelievers of Quraysh barred him from the House. If I am prevented from it, I will do as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did. {Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example}.’ Then he said: ‘I testify before you that I have joined Ḥajj to my Umrah.’ Then he arrived and performed one Ṭawāf for both.”

Ibn Umar performed many pilgrimages, even in times of civil strife in Makkah and its surroundings.

One may ask: what was the secret behind such diligence despite his old age and lofty rank? He had already performed many ḥajj, and was a man of great virtues, why did he not rest himself?

The answer, and Allah knows best, is that such people, despite all their acts of obedience, never felt safe from the plotting of Allah. Just as sins should not cause one to despair from Allah’s mercy, so too obedience should not make one feel secure from His plan.

Furthermore, Ibn Umar was keen to repeat ḥajj so that people would see him and learn from him the rites of pilgrimage. Thus he would earn reward, and be a cause for people’s salvation and expiation of their sins.
He did not throw away his sickle among the harvesters; rather, he held firmly to his sickle and gave others sickles as well, then showed them practically how to reap (by demonstration), and that form of teaching is more firmly established in the heart than mere words.

For this reason, people of knowledge and virtue who are looked up to should intend, in showing their acts of Sunnah and devotion publicly, that the people may see them and follow their example.

Explanatory Footnotes by Translator
1 A sickle is a traditional farming tool used for harvesting crops like wheat, barley, or grass. In context, the “sickle” symbolizes one’s own effort and labor in knowledge and worship.

2 The book is full of shirk based on what I have read in it.

Affirming the Seating of the Prophet ﷺ with his Lord on the Throne

Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī reported: Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā al-Rāzī narrated to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl narrated to us, from Layth, from Mujāhid, regarding the statement of Allah: {It may be that your Lord will raise you to a Praiseworthy Station} [al-Isrāʾ: 79], he said: “He will seat him upon His Throne.”

Imām, the ḥadīth scholar Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī said:
Whoever denies this is, in our view, accused (of deviation). People have always narrated this, intending thereby to anger the Jahmiyyah, because the Jahmiyyah deny that there is anything upon the Throne.

(See: al-Sunnah by al-Khallāl, vol. 1, p. 214)

Imām Yaḥyā bin Abī Ṭālib said:
I do not know of anyone who rejected the ḥadīth of Mujāhid, “He will seat Muḥammad ﷺ upon the Throne.” It was narrated by the masses from Ibn Fuḍayl, from Layth, from Mujāhid, and the reliable ḥadīth scholars accepted it, narrated it publicly, and did not reject it. Rather, they received it with acceptance and joy.

(See: al-Sunnah by al-Khallāl, vol. 1, p. 232)

Imām Muḥammad bin 'Uthmān ibn Abī Shaybah said:
It has reached me that some ignorant people reject the ḥadīth due to their lack of knowledge, rejecting what the scholars before them approved, among those we have mentioned. I do not know of anyone from whom I narrated this ḥadīth except that he accepted it as it came in the report. They were more knowledgeable of the interpretation of the Qurʾān and the Sunnah of the Messenger ﷺ than the ignorant ones who rejected this ḥadīth, claiming that the “Praiseworthy Station” is only the intercession and nothing else. These are the reports of the shuyūkh and trustworthy ones in the city of peace (Baghdad), Kūfah, and elsewhere.

(See: al-Sunnah by al-Khallāl, vol. 1, p. 245)

Imām Abū Bakr al-Ājurrī said:
As for the ḥadīth of Mujāhid regarding the virtue of the Prophet ﷺ and his interpretation of this verse, that Allah will seat him upon the Throne, the shuyūkh from among the people of knowledge and transmission of the ḥadīth of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ received it in the best manner, accepted it in the best manner, did not reject it, and strongly condemned whoever rejected the ḥadīth of Mujāhid. They said: Whoever rejects the ḥadīth of Mujāhid is an evil man.
(See: al-Sharīʿah, vol. 4, p. 1612)

Imām Abū Bakr al-Marwazī said:
Ibrāhīm bin 'Arafah narrated to me, saying: I heard Abū 'Umayr say: I heard Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal when asked about the ḥadīth of Mujāhid “He will seat Muḥammad ﷺ upon the Throne” say: “The scholars have received it with acceptance.”

(See: al-'Arsh by al-Dhahabī, vol. 2, p. 282)

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah said:
It is authentically reported from Mujāhid and others among the Salaf, and the Salaf and Imāms used to narrate it without rejecting it, and they would receive it with acceptance.

(See: Dar'Ta'āruḍ, vol. 5, p. 237)

Al-Qāḍī Abū Ya'lā bin al-Farrāʾ said: Abū Ṭālib bin al-'Ashshārī narrated to me, from the ḥadīth memoriser and scholar al-Dāraquṭnī:

The ḥadīth of intercession regarding Aḥmad —
To Aḥmad the Chosen one we attribute it —
And the ḥadīth has come of his seating —
Upon the Throne also, so we do not deny it —
Pass the ḥadīth as it came —
And do not insert into it what would corrupt it —
And do not deny that he is seated —
And do not deny that He seats him.

Harshness towards the people of falsehood is in fact iḥsān (excellence, doing good).

Allah the Exalted said:
“That is because they suffer neither thirst nor fatigue nor hunger in the cause of Allah, nor do they tread a step that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they inflict any injury upon an enemy but it is recorded for them as a righteous deed. Indeed, Allah does not allow the reward of the doers of good to be lost.” [al-Tawbah 9:120]

I say: reflect on how Allah concluded the verse with His words: “Indeed, Allah does not allow the reward of the muḥsinīn (the doers of good).” This shows that all of the actions mentioned before fall under iḥsān—including His statement: “nor do they tread a step that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they inflict any injury upon an enemy.”

These are stern actions, yet Allah counted them as iḥsān. But people’s common understanding of iḥsān today is limited to charity, kind speech, and maintaining ties.

This is the narrow perception of the masses, whereas this verse expands the horizons.

Thus, harshness against the people of falsehood is in reality mercy for the people of truth and mercy for the people of falsehood themselves.

Most of the divine rulings that amaze people never reached the disbelievers except through this jihād. And how many a person was upon shirk and destruction, only for Allah to save him through this jihād.

The same applies to jihād with words and the struggle against hypocrites for in this lies the realization of true reform.

Ibn Taymiyyah said in Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā [28/53]:
“Filth is sometimes not removed except with a type of roughness, but such roughness then produces cleanliness and softness for which we praise that very harshness.”

Today, people’s narrow view of iḥsān has led them to deny established truths in the religion, and to treat what are not doubts as if they were doubts.

This report has spread widely across social media, and it was shared by a number of well-known preachers.

As you can see, it is attributed here to Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalāʾ. But if you return to the biography of al-Rabīʿ in Siyar, you will not find this report.

And if you search through the books in general, you will not find any trace of it.

I myself had an experience compiling the reports of al-Rabīʿ ibn Khuthaym, which I published on my website under the title “The Authentic Musnad Reports of al-Rabīʿ ibn Khuthaym.”

Among the most comprehensive contemporary works in this field of reports is Aḥmad al-Ṭayyār’s Ḥayāt al-Salaf bayna al-Qawl wa-l-ʿAmal.

I reviewed it and did not find this report. I also asked a group of students of knowledge whether they had come across it, and their answer was negative. Their findings matched my own research.

If it is said: “Do we not show leniency regarding weak reports, especially since these are soft-hearted admonitions (raqāʾiq)?”

It is replied: This only applies when the report actually exists, not when it is something entirely fabricated from the outset.

Nick Fuentes: An American far-right political commentator, known for his anti-Jewish and anti-homosexual views.

He was removed from YouTube, Twitch, DLive, and other platforms due to hate speech and incitement against Jews, and he was also banned from electronic payment services.

He repeatedly makes anti-Jewish statements, questions the Holocaust, and described himself as not wanting America to be a “Judeo-Christian” nation, but rather a purely Christian nation, saying: “You’re either Catholic, or you’re with the Jews.”

His program: “America First”, a livestream where he promotes white nationalism and the far-right, using satire and memes to spread his ideas. Through it, he also organizes a political conference parallel to CPAC, called AFPAC.

Here, he is asked about women entering the world of politics, and he responds with this strange answer:

He says in essence that women entering any field that is specific to men ruins it, because it changes the behavior of the men in that field.

He adds that in general, in mixed-gender fields, women benefit from their appearance or what is called “sexual influence”, which makes fairness unattainable.

His words reminded me of something I once said in some groups that were concerned with critiquing Arab atheism: I told them that the presence of women among them, while they lacked any ethical discipline, would scatter their unity. And indeed, that happened. Many problems later appeared among them due to competition over women, along with mutual accusations and insults.

This is a post from an account whose owner has more than half a million followers from all different sects. His style is to restrict himself to one single question so that people respond in the comments.

Here he asked them: If there were one thing you could erase from existence, and if erased it would never return, what would it be?

The comments were around one thousand. I went through all of them, and honestly, they are like a snapshot of today’s religions and what each one considers to be the greatest form of disbelief:

The religion of American politics = “the Democrats,” “the liberals.”

The religion of conspiracies = “the Jews,” “the Rothschilds.”

The religion of the Palestinian cause = “the Zionists.”

The religion of unity and fusion = “racism,” “hatred.”

The religion of the atheist and the agnostic = “religions.”

The religion of feminism = “men.”

The religion of anti-natalism = “humanity.”

The religion of humanist progressivism = “mosquitoes,” “cancer.”

The religion of nihilism and depression = “myself,” “the world.”

Progressive liberals = “people who belittle others’ minds,” “narrow-minded ones.”

The religion of Red Pill and bachelors = “women,” “feminists.”

The religion of Christians and modernity = “Islam.”

And no one mentioned Christianity, because they take it lightly.

Most of these people’s religion in reality is the fulfillment of desire. It is a seperate religion. One might outwardly claim a certain religion, but interprets it according to his whims.

The affliction is not limited to atheism. There is also concealed atheism, which is to interpret religion according to one’s desires.

The essence of true religion is to place the right of Allah above your own desires, hoping for His reward and fearing His punishment.

Yet it has been subtly planted in the human mind that religion is merely a means to achieve worldly ends. Those ends have become the object of worship, the deity, or at least the ultimate priority.

This is why Islam is detested by many: because it is a religion that cannot be secularized. The right of Allah in it is above everything. And perhaps the one who hates it understands this better than some of those who claim it but distort it.

As for Christianity, it has been trimmed down and domesticated until it no longer instills fear or poses any real concern.

Between “Do not make my grave an Eid” and “Make my birthday an Eid”

Abū Dāwūd said in his Sunan:

“2042 – [...] from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: ‘Do not make your houses like graves, and do not make my grave an Eid, and send blessings upon me, for indeed your blessings reach me wherever you are.’”

This ḥadīth has two well-known interpretations among those affiliated with knowledge:

The first interpretation:
It is the interpretation commonly held by the Ṣūfīs. They say that the Prophet ﷺ forbade making his grave into an Eid, meaning: Do not make my grave like Eid, which is only visited once or twice a year; rather, come to my grave every day!

This interpretation is sometimes used as an argument against celebrating the Mawlid, since the Mawlid is also one day in the year for those who have taken it as an Eid. They often mention acts of devotion done on that day, such as Qur'ān recitation and sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, acts which, in reality, a Muslim should remain constant upon every day.

Though, what dominates their Mawlid gatherings are amusements and entertainment.

The second interpretation:
It is the prohibition of visiting his grave for the sake of sending prayers upon him. This is indicated by the continuation of the report: “And send blessings upon me, for your blessings reach me wherever you are.”

Thus it is a prohibition from designating a specific place to increase in sending ṣalawāt upon him ﷺ, just as it is a prohibition from designating a specific time for that purpose.

Abū Yaʿlā said in his Musnad:

“469 – [...] from 'Alī bin al-Ḥusayn, that he saw a man come to an opening near the grave of the Prophet ﷺ, enter into it and supplicate there. He forbade him, and said: Shall I not inform you of a ḥadīth I heard from my father, from my grandfather, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He said: ‘Do not take my grave as an Eid, nor your houses as graves, for indeed your greetings reach me wherever you are.’”

I say: The truth is that most of those who celebrate (Mawlid) distort the meaning of love just as they distort the meaning of religion. Many people desire a religion that is light and free of burdens.

Whenever you speak to them about the Sunnah and adhering to it, they accuse you of being rigid, extreme, or even “terrorist.”

But when the “love” is shown through celebrations, melodious poems, sweets, and special dress, it is beloved to women and children, and souls naturally incline to it.

You will find many of those who claim love in this manner repulsed by established Sunnahs of the Prophet ﷺ, such as letting the beard grow or shortening the garment - which are in fact obligations. Many of them even turn away from Sunnahs with clear benefits, like the siwāk.

As for the more “knowledgeable” among them, he is often indifferent towards the books of ḥadīth that carry the blessings of abundant ṣalawāt upon the Prophet ﷺ. If he looks into them, it is only for attaining ijāzahs (certificates) or intellectual knowledge, not for referring back to them in disputes. He treats them as coded texts that only a so-called “absolute mujtahid” can decipher.

As for the Ṣūfī adherent, you will find him more attached to the litanies of his ṭarīqah than to the authentic adhkār transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ.

You may see a man wearing a cap with an emblem of the “Prophet’s sandal,” while at the same time he is clean-shaven and his clothes hang below the ankles![!!!]

Indeed, many among them repel people from the Sunnahs outwardly practiced, only out of spite against those they label as “Wahhābīs” when they see them holding firm to such Sunnahs. Did not that Ṣūfī muftī even demand that women remove the niqāb, claiming it is a “Wahhābī custom”?

Their foundations are built upon refusing to subject themselves to the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ under the pretext that the reports are “āḥād.” One of their leading figures even boasted, in a debate with a secularist, that they do not accept solitary reports in creed. Yet most of the Sunnah is solitary reports!

And if only they acted upon the Qur'ān itself! For that famous couplet of theirs says:

“And every text that suggests anthropomorphism -
interpret it or deny [the meaning] it, while asserting transcendence [i.e. that you want to glorify Allāh with this].”

By “text” they mean the Qur'ān and Sunnah. They consider them suggesting disbelief (anthropomorphism), thus they either distort them away from their apparent meaning or treat them as if they never existed. Instead of saying: “Since it has come in the text and multiple proofs, it cannot be false,” they subordinated revelation to a concept of transcendence taken from the Greeks, imposing it upon the Qur'ān and Sunnah.

And after all these corruptions, they invented a false love, built upon overruling the Sharī'ah and contradicting it.
