DIATONIC SCALE
The diatonic scale is called this because of the presence of 2 intervals that are not tonic.
If you check the major scale, the only intervals that are not tonic(2 notes) are E to F and B to C.
Similarly, in a minor scale
C natural minor for instance
C D Eb F G Ab Bb C
D to Eb and G to Ab are semitone intervals.
That's why the major and minor scales are called diatonic scales.
The rules (in summary) for writing either a major or minor scale is that
1. All the pitches in music (A B C D E F G) must be represented
2. No mixture of accidentals or signs (sharp, # and flat, b)
For example, A# major
Most people will write it as
A# C D Eb F G A A#
This is wrong because, The Pitch B is missing, and A occurs twice.

Music generally is beyond the piano or keyboard.
All instruments are suppose to be in Concord with one another.
For instance C# and Db
C# major is
C# D# E# F# G# A# B#
This has 7 sharps which you can use to know this key on a staff.
Db major
Db Eb F GB Ab Bb C
This one has 5 flats.
So, you can see two different keys in music. Though practically, they are similar
