🚨 Meta AI Support Bot Used to Hijack Instagram Accounts

A major security incident involving Meta's AI-powered support assistant has sparked concern across the cybersecurity community after researchers discovered that attackers could take over Instagram accounts by manipulating the AI support workflow. Meta has since patched the issue and is securing affected accounts.

πŸ” What Happened?

Instead of exploiting a technical vulnerability in Instagram itself, attackers abused Meta's AI support assistant.

The reported attack flow was surprisingly simple:

β€’ The attacker contacted Meta's AI support bot.
β€’ The bot was convinced to associate a new email address with a target Instagram account.
β€’ A verification code was sent to the attacker's email.
β€’ The attacker completed the process and received a password reset option.
β€’ Full account takeover followed.

Several high-profile accounts were reportedly affected, including well-known brands, public figures, and valuable "OG" usernames.

⚠️ Why This Matters

This wasn't a sophisticated exploit involving malware, zero-days, or advanced hacking techniques.

It was a failure in trust and identity verification.

The incident demonstrates a growing risk:

➑️ AI systems are increasingly being granted authority to perform sensitive actions.
➑️ If proper security controls are missing, AI can become an attack surface itself.
➑️ Security automation without strong validation creates opportunities for abuse.

πŸ’‘ Key Lessons for Security Teams

1️⃣ Never allow AI systems to make identity-sensitive decisions without additional verification.

2️⃣ Treat account recovery flows as high-risk attack surfaces.

3️⃣ Every AI-powered support action should have strict authorization checks.

4️⃣ "User asked nicely" must never equal "User is authorized."

5️⃣ Human review should remain available for critical account actions.

πŸ›‘ Tips & Tricks For Users

βœ… Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on all important accounts.

βœ… Use a unique email address for important social media accounts.

βœ… Regularly review connected devices and active sessions.

βœ… Remove old recovery methods you no longer control.

βœ… Enable login alerts and security notifications.

βœ… Monitor password reset emails, even if you didn't request them.

βœ… Use a password manager and generate unique passwords.

βœ… Review account recovery settings every few months.

πŸ† Security Takeaway

For years, security professionals warned that account recovery is often weaker than account authentication.

This incident proves that even when the login system is secure, a flawed recovery process can undermine the entire security model.

The future is not "AI vs Human."

The future is AI + Security Controls.

Without the second part, incidents like this become inevitable.

πŸ’° ~$5,000 in Bug Bounties from a Single Finding Pattern

Over the last few days, I submitted 6 reports on a public bug bounty program:

βœ… 5 High Severity reports accepted
⚠️ 1 Duplicate

The interesting part?

The initial lead came from Secret Hunter, which discovered hidden endpoints inside JavaScript files. After manual analysis, endpoint correlation, and impact chaining, I was able to expand the attack surface and identify the same vulnerability pattern across multiple related domains.

This highlights an important reality of bug bounty hunting:

πŸ” Automation finds opportunities
🧠 Manual analysis creates impact
πŸ’° Impact creates bounties

While automation uncovered the hidden attack surface, the real value came from manual validation, endpoint chaining, and understanding the application's logic.

# πŸ”₯ Hunting IDN Homograph Vulnerabilities in Bug Bounty Programs

An IDN Homograph Attack abuses visually similar Unicode characters to create domains that appear identical to legitimate ones.

Example:

Legitimate:
https://hackerone.com

Lookalike:
https://hΠ°ckerone.com

The second domain uses a Unicode character instead of the standard Latin letter, making it look nearly identical to the human eye.

## Where to Look

Focus on features that trust or validate domain names:

- OAuth Redirect URI validation
- SSO integrations
- Email domain verification
- Organization or workspace domain ownership
- Webhook allowlists
- CORS origin validation
- Trusted domain allowlists
- Import/sync integrations

## Testing Workflow

1. Identify a feature that validates or trusts a domain.
2. Understand how the application performs the validation (registration, verification, redirect, etc.).
3. Register a lookalike IDN domain using Unicode characters that resemble the target domain (only if permitted by the bug bounty program and applicable laws).
4. Complete the normal verification process with your own controlled domain.
5. Observe whether the application incorrectly treats your lookalike domain as the legitimate one.
6. Verify whether this leads to a security impact, such as bypassing a domain restriction, associating an unauthorized organization, or accepting an untrusted redirect.
7. Document the root cause, impact, and evidence, and report it responsibly.

## Things to Watch For

- Unicode normalization issues
- Punycode conversion inconsistencies
- Case-insensitive comparisons without canonicalization
- Visual-only domain validation
- Weak allowlist implementations

## Important Note

A lookalike domain alone is not a vulnerability. The issue exists only when the application's validation logic incorrectly trusts or equates the malicious domain with the legitimate one.

πŸ”₯ Should the next "3 Bugs That Pay" book be a complete deep dive into HTTP Request Smuggling?
🚨The poll made the decision easy

The next book in the "3 Bugs That's Pay" series will be entirely dedicated to one vulnerability class:

HTTP Request Smuggling

Why?

Because this single vulnerability class has earned me $62,654 in BB rewards

It's the complete methodology I use in real bug bounty engagements

Inside the book you'll learn:

β€’ The theory behind every desynchronization type (CL.TE, TE.CL, TE.TE, CL.0, CL.CL)
β€’ How to fingerprint targets before wasting time testing
β€’ A practical recon methodology
β€’ Modern detection techniques
β€’ Eliminating false positives
β€’ Reliable confirmation methods
β€’ Advanced exploitation (Cache Poisoning, Session Hijacking, Auth Bypass)
β€’ CDN & WAF testing strategies
β€’ 4 real-world case studies
β€’ Professional report writing
β€’ CVSS & severity negotiation
β€’ Ready-to-use payloads
β€’ Ready-to-use report templates
β€’ Complete testing checklist

It's the exact workflow I refined through years of hunting and real-world bug bounty experience.

More updates soonπŸš€

🚨For years, you've seen me post HTTP Request Smuggling reports, writeups, and bug bounty rewards.πŸ’°

Almost every time, someone would ask:

"When are you going to teach us your methodology?"

πŸ”₯I finally have an answer.

πŸ’β€β™‚οΈI'm putting everything I've learned into the next 3 Bugs That's Pay book.

No fluff.

🚨Just the complete methodology I use to hunt HTTP Request Smuggling vulnerabilitiesβ€”from recon to reporting.

πŸ’°The same methodology behind $62,654 in bug bounty rewards.

# 🧠 Methodology > Payloads

One of the biggest mistakes I see in HTTP Request Smuggling hunting is starting with payloads.

I don't.

Every target is different.

Before sending a single payload, I first fingerprint the architecture, understand the request flow, identify the front-end and back-end behavior, and only then start testing.

That's exactly the methodology I cover in the upcoming 3 Bugs That's Pay – HTTP Request Smuggling.

Because finding HRS bugs isn't about luckβ€”it's about having a repeatable process.

πŸš€ More previews coming soon.

🚨 What this book is NOT.

❌ A payload collection.

❌ A copy of PortSwigger labs.

❌ A list of tricks.

❌ A 30-minute crash course.

This book is about building a repeatable methodology for finding real HTTP Request Smuggling vulnerabilities.

The goal isn't to memorize payloads.

The goal is to understand *why* they work, *when* to use them, and *how* to validate real findings.

That's the difference between solving labs and finding bugs in production.

More previews soon. πŸš€
