Baltic Sea
Context: The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has announced plans to strengthen its presence in the Baltic Sea following the suspected sabotage of an undersea power cable and four internet cables in the region.
About Baltic Sea
The Baltic Sea, in Northern Europe, is a marginal sea of the Atlantic Ocean and the youngest sea on Earth, formed 10,000–15,000 years ago after the last Ice Age. It spans about 1,600 km in length, 193 km in width, and covers 377,000 sq. km, with an 8,000 km coastline shared by nine countries, including Sweden, Finland, and Russia. It connects to the Atlantic via the Danish Straits, the White Sea via the White Sea Canal, and the North Sea via the Kiel Canal. Major gulfs include the Gulf of Bothnia, Gulf of Finland, and Gulf of Riga. Known as the largest brackish inland sea, its low salinity comes from shallow depth and inflow from 60 rivers, notably the Neva. It has over 20 islands, with Gotland being the largest.
