Garien Gap
Context: The illegal journey to the U.S. often involves a dangerous route through multiple countries, including the deadly Darién Gap.
About Garien Gap
The Darién Gap is a dense, jungle-covered region spanning northern Colombia and southern Panama, stretching about 60 miles (97 kilometers). Characterized by muddy, wet, and unstable terrain, it has emerged as a key route for global human migration. Geographically, it marks the easternmost part of the Isthmus of Panama, extending into northwestern Colombia near the Gulf of Urabá, and serves as the physical link between Central and South America. The area is hot and humid, dominated by tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps, and low mountain ranges with cloud forest vegetation. Due to its harsh conditions, the Darién has remained sparsely populated.
