Public Talk on "The Cosmic Time Machine -What the light from distant galaxies can tell us"

Jyotirvidya Parisanstha has organised a study tour to Lonar Meteoritic Impact Crater from 27-29 December 2024.

Lonar Crater was formed about 5 lakh years ago and is the only meteoritic crater found in Basaltic rock. It is 1.8 km in diameter and is one of the biggest impact craters on earth. It's a unique site with archeological, ecological, geological and astronomical importance. The study tour will include visits to places related to the impact phenomenon, e.g. Lonar Crater, Ambar Crater, and Sleeping Hanuman(magnetic Hanuman idol) along with other spots around Lonar.

Fees incl. of dinner on Day 1 (non-refundable):

*What is an opposition?*
During its opposition, *Jupiter and the Sun are on the opposite sides of Earth* which is *at ~02:30 am IST on 8th December 2024*. From our perspective on the Earth, Jupiter rises in the east just as the sun sets in the west. After staying up in the sky the entire night, sets in the west just as the sun rises in the east.
*We will also be witnessing the highest brightest of the planet* going up to a *magnitude of -2.8*.

Title: *How did the Universe come to look the way it does?*

Speaker: *Dr. Arif Babul, University of Victoria*

Dr. Arif Babul is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Victoria in Canada. He received his PhD from Princeton University in 1989. He is a recipient of several prestigious awards for his significant contributions to the study of cosmic structure, including galaxy formation. Most notably, he held a NATO Science Fellowship at the University of Cambridge and was elected U.S. National Academy of Science Kavli Fellow. He was recently elected Fellow of the American Physical Society, and he currently holds both the prestigious Infosys Visiting Chair Professorship at the Indian Institute for Science and a Leverhulme Visiting Professorship at the University of Edinburgh.
