PALESTINIAN ISLAMIC JIHAD FIGURES DENY RUMORS OF REASONS FOR ARREST OF THE TWO FIGURES

As reported by Al-Quds Al-Arabi (23/4), Bassam Al-Agha, the head of the Syrian branch of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement, commented on the arrest of two Palestinian Islamic Jihad figures several days ago.

He said, the possible reason the two figures were arrested was because of past personal files concerning the two figures. He also said that the arrest of the two figures had nothing to do with the administrative Palestinian Islamic jihad movement in Syria.

Until today, Al-Agha confirmed that this arrest had nothing to do with the Palestinian Islamic jihad movement, there was purely another problem.

He stated that the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement even often coordinated with the Syrian authorities, one of which was related to escorting 2 of their troops who were martyred because they were involved in a clash when in Lebanon against Hezbullah. The Syrian authorities and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad worked together to repatriate the bodies from Lebanon to Syria.

Al-Agha also denied rumors that the arrests were closely related to Mahmoud Abbas' visit to Damascus last Friday, saying that Abu 'Ali Yasir was detained on Thursday, before Abbas arrived in Damascus.

He also denied rumors from some parties trying to link the arrests to the visit of US Congress members to Damascus and America's requirements to lift sanctions on Syria, but he believed "the detentions are personal in nature regarding issues that may have occurred in the past and have nothing to do with current events."

Al-Agha also revealed that he is currently trying to request the release of the two leaders.
