Quite honestly, it is a rabbit hole. But it pays off in dividends. The only thing I pay for over the last 10 years is new hardware (rarely) and a decent PDF editor. Everything else is FREE!

Hi everyone. I got a degree in computers in 1999 and way back then i knew microsoft were a bunch of gangsters selling crap software. No one wanted to know. I watched as each release of ms office and windows would be worse and worse, bigger, uglier, slower, resource hungry and harder and harder to do stuff....no one wanted to know back then....so this group is a treat for me 🌈. Same Neil. Got my degree in Computer Science in 06. Unfortunately most businesses use MS Windows including my work place. It’s a resource hog. I switched to MAC before it was cool but they micro manage everything using the APP store and iCloud. I’ve been using Ubuntu for years.

Open source. Closest thing to control is the people who write the software/operating systems get to choose what they want to make/work on. Kind of like freedom.

Oh my gosh! This is all so wonderful but I have no idea where to start!! I have a MacBook Air 2015. Can I use that to do this. And can someone just tell me where to start? I know there are instructions step by step but I just need to start at the beginning. How do I find that place?

I worked for Federal Govt for 28 yrs, and our IT folks screamed for going to Linux for security, but the Dept still bought Google and MS. I was just a nobody, but I sure felt the IT was right. I detested Windows and Google mail, and knew the security of Govt programs and employees were at risk, and so it went. When retired, I went to iMac and iPads thinking more secure. Wrong I was. Hope hope hope linux will be the answer.

Honestly, can anyone here refer me to the kindergarten class? All the language here is above my head. I need to learn but I’m literally at a subzero level and I just want to catch up. I have a MacBook Air fir 2015. I just need to know if I can work with what I have first. Then I need to lean what to do.

So insane, I've been waiting for someone to come out with the alternative to Google and MS etc and its been available all along. I used to even have ubuntu years ago but didn't even realize the importance of it back then! Thank you!

Here is a screen shot of my Lunix Manjaro Budgie install. I am loving it so far. Windows is gone on my desktop. I still have Windows on my laptop, it is my back up until I fully get my desktop all tweaked and all the apps I need installed. Still working on finding all my applications replacements. Once I am fully satisfied my desktop is set up and I am fully functional on it, I will switch my laptop of as well.
