If you are one of the several hundred learners enrolled in the Linux for Beginners private course run by this channel, your invitations for tomorrow's Weekend Linux Workshop (to be held Sat. Dec. 10th @ 5:00pm ET) are being sent out to your email right now! (If you can't be there live, the wekeend workshops are always recorded so you can watch them later on the LMS!)
This week, a favorite topic: protection from Hackers, total Security, and keeping your Digital Life safe with Linux! We revisit many of the ways you may have been vulnerable in Windows, and how you are SAFER now in Linux with complete control to lock down all of your network ports! Be amazed as you can now see every single packet of data that tries to hit your system!
In Unix-like systems, unlike Windows, nothing is hidden. You can know every single thing happening, and take back full control of your computer from 'big tech', once and for all!
If you can't make it to this weekend's live workshop, don't worry, it will be recorded (as always) and posted in our LMS system, for you to view with your login and password, at any time, 24/7.

Sometime around 1980, LCD watches with plastic cases became much easier and cheaper to make. Many new electronic watch designs flooded stores back then. Manufacturers had to keep adding functionality to compete. You might remember various licensed Nintendo game watches that allowed the wearer to play miniature watch-game versions of The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros.
This was one of the first popular electronic game watches, the Game-10 (1978). It played a three-line version of Space Invaders. It also told the time 😁

Lord, we rejoice at the Christmas story and all the wondrous glory that we see in the manger scene in the town of Bethlehem, and in the fields, while shepherds watched their flocks by night. Our hearts are full of joy at the good news that was proclaimed by the angel of the Lord, and we are amazed to behold a heavenly choir of angelic beings singing,"glory to God in the highest."
But most of all, we humbly kneel before Your throne of grace when we understand that the baby in the manger must one day be crucified to the cruel cross, so that our sins could be forgiven. Father, thank You for sending Jesus to be born so that He could die for our sins. In His name we pray, Amen.

What is an email Phishing attack? Follow-up to yesterday’s “Test your Knowledge” quiz on this Telegram channel.
"Phishing is an attack where a scammer calls you, texts or emails you, or uses social media to trick you into clicking a malicious link, downloading malware , or sharing sensitive information. Phishing attempts are often generic mass messages, but the message appears to be legitimate and from a trusted source (e.g. from a bank, courier company)."
Be careful! Watch out for email Phishing attacks, especially during the holiday season. Email Phishing attacks are common this time of year.
In the attached screenshot, you can see an example of a fake email sent as a “Phishing” attack. One of the easiest ways to recognize an email scam is bad grammar and the fake domain used in the email address. An email from a legitimate organization should be well written and be sent from that organization’s true address.

In the famous George Owell book, 1984, spiritual worship is removed from the lives of people, and Christianity becomes a relic of the past. A church had been converted into a propaganda museum, and everything sacred had been destroyed after the political revolution had replaced God with Big Brother: “Everything faded into the mist. The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became truth.”
The dystopia of 1984 portrays religion as a form of ignorance akin to the “dark ages,” as an impediment to the totalitarian party’s so-called “freedom,” progress and to a world order where “truth,” law, and morality are determined by the “government.” Sound eerily familiar? Sometimes I wonder how close we are to that, today.
“Technology” as portrayed by the 1984 book conjures utopian visions of “comfort and pleasure” that result in bad outcomes instead of inventions meant to help people live better lives. This view suggests that technological innovation is incompatible with thousands of years of human wisdom. To me, it sounds like Harari’s rhetoric from his World Economic Forum speeches. “Sophisticated-sounding” to the untrained ear, yet simplistic, lacking in depth when rigorously scrutinized.
I believe We the People are capable of much more than a one-vs. the other approach to modernization. Harari’s speeches are pretty dumb, truthfully. We ought to be capable of redirecting those who are fascinated, possibly intimidated by the rate of new knowledge creation yet spiritually bankrupt (such as Noah H., here), towards a more sophisticated outcome that prioritizes what is good for our human souls over primitive emptiness as the machines they envision are truly primitive in God’s universe.
As human beings with good hearts we must hold on to our faith with all our might. As our world moves forward discovering and using new technologies, it’s not the time to run away from the challenge of achieving a better outcome. Thus we are at a point where we are desperately in need of the wisdom of the past, a focus on the love of family, and a sense of urgency to better understand God’s truth.

Heads up!! The Jeff.pro channel has been following an ongoing saga where the payments company Paypal first said they would fine people’s accounts for “speech” they don’t like anywhere on the internet — then they’ve been refusing to let people close their Paypal accounts.
Here’s a story from one of our chat room members who finally managed to close his Paypal account after apparently three months of trying. Anyone else have stories about Paypal?

Python Beginners 5 group Audio Stream - Dec. 15th 2022
Python for Beginners - Group 5
In tonight’s audio recording, Jeffrey Peterson talks about some of the outcomes from the first four groups of Python programming students who learned how to build computer programs starting in February last year.
How can learning to program a computer change your life and future? Well, that’s for you to decide. Some who entered our classes wanted to learn a new career path. Some wanted to learn a new hobby. Others wanted to learn everything they can about how their computers work, so they can make their own programs and take complete control of how their data is being used. All of that is possible with Python, which has become the world’s most popular programming language in recent years.
Python Group 5 is filling up right now. Open up a new world of knowledge for your life by learning the Python computer programming language in the new year! For details, email shane@jeff.pro!
