The Linux Computer Operating System continues to gain market share

As of September, every major Linux OS distribution had experienced growth vs. the previous year.

The numbers are still small but there is no question a trend has developed over the past three years — Open Source Linux is gaining, while the closed-source, legacy Operating System that made Bill Gates famous, Microsoft Windows, was starting to experience its first sustained trend of decline in computer history.

There’s a story here. Much more than the casual computer user might realize: It’s a story about how people started using computers back in the early days, about a power-hungry man named Bill Gates who pushed subpar software on the world for something like thirty years before people started learning better—it’s a story about how he realized he wouldn’t always be able to do that some time around when he lost his attempts to destroy Unix-like Operating Systems (2005-2007), how he started ‘getting out’ of the software business and ‘getting in’ to everything else he could, and harming the world in different ways with his monopolistic mindset, in the process.

What you see on the chart above also reveals a story about people waking up about how they use their technology, slowly, but steadily. The trend is still a slow one, considering where end users of technology are coming from, but the trend is clear and consistent enough now for most in the industry to see … and it’s accelerating.

It is the message of this Telegram channel. There’s better ways to do things than relying on ‘the [technology] establishment.’

Congrats to the State of Louisiana for getting out of BlackRock holdings. Would be great to see other states follow. More than great, it’s probably one of the most important priorities as part of saving the country.

A reminder to backup your Linux machine with Timeshift. Don't wait until there is a problem, or you could end up losing data. Timeshift prevents many headaches and can undo mistakes and bad updates.

There is a small software interface that is used to start up and configure system settings when you first power on your computer. It can be opened by holding down certain key combinations at start-up. What is this system configuration interface called?

If you are one of the several hundred learners enrolled in the Linux for Beginners private course run by this Telegram channel, your invitations for tomorrow's Weekend Linux Workshop (to be held Sat. Oct. 8th @ 5:00pm ET) are being sent out to your email right now! (If you can't be there live, the wekeend workshops are always recorded so you can watch them later on the LMS!)

This week, we answer: How practical is it for most people to completely leave behind 'big tech' software like Microsoft Windows, and live our entire digital lives relying on Unix-like Free Software, such as Linux? Is there a risk switching to Linux from Windows?

And, where to go to get the best desktop environments, backgrounds, screen savers, and other free goodies for Linux!

In Unix-like systems, unlike Windows, nothing is hidden. You can know every single thing happening, and take back full control of your computer from 'big tech', once and for all!

If you can't make it to this weekend's live workshop, don't worry, it will be recorded (as always) and posted in our LMS system, for you to view with your login and password, at any time, 24/7.

Anyone remember the old “video game tables” in restaurants in the 80’s and 90’s? 😁

A great place to eat your pizza…!

The “blackberry” was a popular mobile device in the early 2000’s.

If you had your friend’s blackberry PIN, you could send direct messages back and forth, this was before app messaging became popular.

THIS IS A REAL PROBLEM! The time is NOW to CLOSE your PayPal account if you have not done so already!

PayPal just announced it’ll steal $2,500 from any account that promotes “misinformation” or points of view that PayPal doesn’t agree with.

Apparently this also applies to any bank account you may have linked to your PayPal. They can initiate a debit from your bank account for $2,500 after they scan the internet and find something you posted that they don’t like. You have no recourse.

Why would anyone use this fascist service any more?

JUST IN - PayPal spox on $2,500 misinfo fine: "An AUP notice recently went out in error that included incorrect information. PayPal is not fining people for misinformation and this language was never intended to be inserted in our policy... We’re sorry for the confusion this has caused."

PayPal now appears to be backing down after many users posted on social media that they will be closing their accounts.

☝️☝️ Can’t speak for anyone else, but as far as the admins of the Jeff.pro channel are concerned, we’re done trusting Paypal. They were bad enough about freezing accounts and holding funds already. Who knows what ‘woke’ policies they will try to impose next. From here on, use at your own risk …
