You can install the rEFInd bootloader on your iMac (or any other Mac that doesn’t appear to be booting from USB), which will allow you to boot (and install) Linux on your system.

It seemed like a mountain when I first started. I'm one of JP's "granny's" who had never heard of Linux before last September! I started with a couple of old, unused computers sitting in a closet (they were Windows 7 or 8 originally), so these were great to "practice" on! By December I sold my MacBook Pro and am using one of those old laptops as my primary machine. It has been a great journey to freedom!
