Finally, after 3+ months of reading this alien language, I mustered the courage to make a bootable usb (using Balena Etcher), and today (with the patient help of Michael on forums.jeff.pro) wiped the hard drive on a Lenovo IdeaPad and installed Ubuntu!
I am so grateful to Jeffrey Peterson for starting this movement away from big tech! Thanks also to CodeMonkeyZ for letting many of us know about this Channel, all the great Admins here, and all who share.
It is changing our lives! If this old lady can do it, anybody can.
Happy New Year to all! β€οΈ

If all I have at this point is one laptop with windows, is it best I just wait till I can get another to change just one of them to Linux?
I'm not terribly tech savvy but realize this would be good for us as individuals and would be good for the world. I am just unsure if I should wait to get another laptop before learning to make this switch.

Fooling around with Ventoy. There are 11 distros on the sd card in that little usb adapter. Iβve booted to Fedora desktop, Mint (have to use usb to Ethernet adapter there), Linux Lite, and Zorin Lite and MX1. MX1 hung going into gui. Fedora ran like a dream. Still playing with this.

I can relate. As much as things go over my head at the time, Iβve realized some of these terms are sinking in somehow. I plan to keep showing up with an open mind. There is so much positive intent itβs bound to rub off π.

If youβre running for office & havenβt mentioned social media censorship β especially after a Congresswoman was suspended from Twitter β how can we expect you to be bold enough to lead in a Republican majority if you arenβt even bold enough to take a stance now?
Weβre watching.

I went with Ubuntu on my old machine and it works well. The advantage to that is it is so easy to learn and has lots of resources for beginners. Linux for dummies uses Ubuntu. Its good for beginners like us.

I have been running POP-OS of a week now. I continue to search and I think I will ultimately switch to Manjaro KDE. I have 2 ssd drives one is my original Windows install and I have just deactivated the drive for now. There are 2 Windows programs that I want to be able to run One is a biblical research program based on Folio Views software another is E-Sword. I am trying to decide the best way to set these up. one would be to use Virtualbox and setup the virtual machine to use the existing installation of windows or using something like play on linux or crossover. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions with these options and/or with e-sword?

First they were censoring and deleting at the account level on sites like Twitter.
Then they started removing apps from circulation because there's only two popular app stores (Google Play and Apple iOS store).
Eventually, they will start trying to take control of your technology how ever they can, at the Operating System level (Windows, MacOS). Mark my words.
If you've been following this group, you're way ahead of the curve. By learning to use Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and the Linux O.S., you're back in control of your technology, and you're on the right path for your future. I'm proud of everyone who is learning, you're doing great! π₯³π

One of the things our Jeff.pro technology community agrees on, is Brave Search seems to be the preferred, non-big-tech alternative to Google for Web searches.
Why? Many reasons, but this is what we notice mentioned the most: "Independent search Even supposedly βneutralβ or βprivateβ search engines rely on big tech for results. Brave is different. We deliver results based on our own built-from-scratch index. Weβre beholden to no one."
You can research Brave Search yourself: https://brave.com/search/

Kaye, I'm a 60 year old new grandma that eventually downloaded Mint and got rid of Windows 10. It was learning another language, but the people here and in the forum helped me when I had a question that I thought was stupid or too elementary. They were gracious and kind and funny. I also took the beginners class for a few months and it was remarkable. Stay, read, look up stuff. Being free is worth it.

Can someone advise me on a couple things please. I have a Dell Latitude, de-googled with Linux. I set up Thuderbird email with or through Gandi. I guess I have to pay an anual feeπ€·π»ββοΈI had to "attatch" my gmail to get it. Does any of this sound normal. (should I just use my gmail?) There were too many pages to read on the "contract agreement"with Gandi; Is this a safe one? Also, I want to start using my telegram account on the Dell/Linux computer; I cannot seem to get to do it successfully. Any suggestions?
