I have periodically gone back and relistened to Jeffrey Peterson's audio chats... Its amazing how I hear things differently the more I learn... Many things just went right over my head when i first heard them (back when Linux and distro were brand new words). September 23rd is one of my favorites. I think my Linux-Ambassador message improves as I listen, too!!

Question. . I am seeing many computer cpu's fail right about the time that the microsoft operating system is due for and upgrade. I have 4 cpu's that all work fine except the hdd has/or is about to fail. Is anyone seeing this pattern.??? I am changing the hdd to a ssd with linux installed and it is working out really well. Good price, durable(no moving parts) and not expensive. Best part is that we can continue to use the computer instesd of throwing it away.

I believe it’s all part of “planned obsolescence” it’s with everything. It’s a way of always keeping us buying new things and spending more and more just to maintain the things we use like our technology and vehicles. Another reason why the ruling elites don’t want us fixing our own things. They can’t feed off us if we do that. Incidentally they wouldn’t have the money to spend in China on manufacturing viruses to “escape” and justify mail in voting either. Sorry, off on a tangent there lol!

A guy I used to work with had the message coming up on Windows all the time that his hard drive was failing, so he purchased a new hard drive and someone imaged his machine for him. He gave me that "failing" hard drive in exchange for my doing a welding job for him which I was happy to do free for him anyway.

That was about five years ago now and that hard drive is in one of my Linux laptops and gets used all the time and never misses a beat.

Exact same here! I tried 4 or 5 different versions of Linux. Lots of frustration but then I realized what a learning experience it was. I have Ubuntu 20.04 on an old HP 2000 laptop with KDE Plasma and it runs like a champ. This machine will be next, then my phone. A whole new world of safety and security opened up thanks to this channel.

Where do I start? I have an old laptop that I would like to try to learn how all this works.

I totally agree, I thought about doing it and thought "what is the worst that can happen? " then I took a deep breath and jumped in...I am so glad I did, using a computer is new and exciting again. I now look forward to using my computer more than using my toaster!

I converted months ago to Linux Mint and no looking back, I was so pleased with the results I just started helping! Honestly necessity is the mother of invention, I was playing around with formatting an external drive, and being tired mistook and reformatted my internal Windows drive. I just shrugged my shoulders and dug in. It has become my happy place! :)

Wanna hear something funny? You Tube/Google asked me what my trust level was. I said not at all.

My kid is currently asking me what version of Linux I want. I told him everyone is using the one with the little penguin. To which he laughs and calls me a boomer😆 So glad he knows what he's doing because I don't.

I put Ubuntu on my moms computer.
I ended up putting KDE on it and she likes it better, so you might like Kubuntu. It has a lot of similarities with the windows interface

FB used to ask me if I "trust FB" , on several occasions. At that time I had no clue what they were up to. That was around 2017 to 2018. People are waking up en mass!!!

Years ago I tested 5 different distros and found Ubuntu was most compatible with all the hardware in my laptop. This year I tested Ubuntu for my desktop and found running from USB worked but after the install the video driver failed. Next I installed mint (3 different flavors), then heard Debian had the ability to switch desktop environments with a simple logout, and login to different one. Got Gnome tweaked up to my liking and was feeling comfortable, then on a whim switched to xfce. WOW! I like that so much better! Reading about lightweight distros and finding xfce repeatedly mentioned reinforces my conclusion that this is a good match for my old hardware. Goodbye Google… not going to miss you.
