Currently researching and writing about events around the time of the Kanazawa treaty which opened up a closed Japan to foreign ships. So when I attended a batik canting session with Ems and Beth, I chose to do an interpretation of a Hokusai piece on The Great Wave of Kanazawa. The treaty, a metaphorical great wave, was initiated by Commodore Matthew Perry, and was the death knell for Ryukyu.
