The Flower of ApartheidπŸ₯₯

In 1975, the South African government made a strange decision: to place the protea on the country's coat of arms. At that time, the country was living under apartheid (a policy of racial inequality).

The white government chose as a symbol a plant that cannot exist without African animals. The protea is a flower pollinated by black elephant shrews🦝

According to the official version, the protea symbolized "the beauty and potential of South Africa." Unofficially, it was a gesture towards the "colored" population. Black activists saw it as mockery.

Interestingly, during apartheid there were "white" and "black" botanical gardens. In Kirstenbosch (for whites), 87 species of proteas were cultivated. In Soweto (for blacks) β€” none. The official explanation: "proteas are too difficult to care for by uneducated people."

The paradox is that traditional knowledge about proteas belonged to African peoplesπŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

After the fall of apartheid, Nelson Mandela made an unexpected decision: to keep the protea on the coat of arms but to rethink its meaning.
"The protea survived apartheid as it survived fires," he said. "It is not to blame that it was used by the wrong people. Now it symbolizes not the superiority of some over others, but the ability to be reborn after catastrophe."
In the new South African constitution, the protea is described as "a symbol of the beauty of our land and the flourishing potential of the nation."
