A short winter holidays quiz to have a bit of language practice and possibly extend your cultural knowledge:)
And in case you like quizzes (notice it’s two z when it’s plural and one z in singular) here’s quite a collection suitable for almost any level starting with strong A2

a few rules that can help with choosing what to read in English if you’re not used to it:

💡choose something you know for sure you’d be interested in reading even if you don’t understand 40% of the words

🎄 don’t stop reading and try to follow the plot even if you don’t understand 40% of the words – they’ll become clearer and clearer the further you read

🍬books written in second half of 20th and in 21st century generally have simpler language than the books written earlier, so choose Hemingway over Conan Doyle, Conan Doyle over Dickens, Dickens over Shakespeare, Shakespeare over Beowulf. Btw, Hemingway writes with rather simple words and grammar compared to many of his contemporaries:)

🧦everything set further back in time – historical novels, fantasy in historical settings – is going to use more complex vocabulary. the same goes for everything about politicians or lawyers – they have special professional languages that even native speakers might often fail to understand unless they’re interested in the topic.

🌲DO NOT try to translate every unfamiliar word you see: you are reading to develop the skill of understanding a written text in English, not to build up on your vocabulary – this is a separate skill which is also nice, but you need to choose your purpose, for vocabulary don’t choose more than 7 new words at a time, for reading – focus on the plot, not on the vocabulary
