could - это не только прошедшее время can, это еще и мог бы, и про это помнят в просьбах и часто забывают в догадках/предсказаниях

e.g.
I couldn’t do it even if I tried = I wouldn’t be able to do it even if I tried

but! Notice that these native speakers will be seen by others as poorly educated so you can follow suit only if it’s okay for you to be seen this way:)
