Итак, the truth behind garden variety:
используют его говоря о чем-то обыкновенном, заурядном, повседневном. Началось это из садоводства: так называли растения, которые можно встретить практически в каждом саду, т.е. ничего нового, всё обычное.
В британском английском говорят немного по-другому: common and garden, но смысл тот же:)
Примеры:
US This outbreak is different from garden-variety respiratory illness, experts say, because of the number of cases that are leading to pneumonia.
US This is a garden-variety legal case that doesn't deserve to get any press attention.
