Nassim Taleb on Languages and Minority Dictatorship
as commerce
the brand of – ‘the brand of’ в переносном, часто ироническом, смысле используют как «тот самый ххх», «тот самый тип ххх»the reverse is less likely – a more advanced way to say “the opposite”civil servants – госслужащиеcompatriots – соотечественники as commerce
grew to dominate modern life - хорошая и емкая структура “grew to perform some action”, сравните с “as commerce grew and began to dominate modern life” – в этом случае more words – more mess🤷🏻♀️

the immitigable chasm – непреодолимая пропасть

A wonderful story 🦑
Look how the word ‘quite’ can be used with verbs, not only adjectives:)
I’ll never quite forget
In informal speaking, we often use quite with like, enjoy, understand and agree to talk about our opinions or preferences. Depending on the context, it can mean ‘a bit’, ‘a lot’ or ‘totally’.
I quite like tennis but I can never play proper games because I can’t serve. (I like tennis a bit.)
I quite enjoy sitting here and watching people go by. (I like it a lot.)
I quite agree. You’re absolutely right. (I agree completely.)
I can quite understand that the news would have upset her. (I totally understand.)

Beautiful ✨
Ever-forward - consistently moving towards the objective
This is our responsibility as a human race to move ever-forward, guided by curiousity and will.
Undeterred - still continuing to do something or still enthusiastic about doing it despite a bad situation
After four years of hardships, Thomas remains undeterred.
Unyielding - refusing to change
I thought that morale was low, but there was allied with it a spirit that was unyielding despite their difficulties.

“the AI does not love you, nor does it hate you, and you are made of atoms it can use for something else.”
Eliezer Yudkowsky, leading researcher at the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, gives his answer to the open letter on AI research: https://time.com/6266923/ai-eliezer-yudkowsky-open-letter-not-enough/
Some phrases worth noticing:
Sentient life - разумная жизнь : “the most likely outcome is AI that does not do what we want, and does not care for us nor for sentient life in general”
Alignment problem - проблема предустановки соответствия AI человеческим ценностям :
“OpenAI’s openly declared intention is to make some future AI do our AI alignment homework.”
Imbue - внушить, вселить, встроить : “That kind of caring is something that could in principle be imbued into an AI but we are not ready and do not currently know how.”
I’d be remiss in - с моей стороны было бы пренебрежением : “I’d be remiss in my moral duties as a human if I didn’t also mention that we have no idea how to determine whether AI systems are aware of themselves.”
