A Stanford University study found that "AI flattery reduces prosocial intentions and promotes addiction," and chatbots are overly accommodating when giving advice in interpersonal interactions, confirming users' behavior even when it's harmful or illegal.
The study was divided into two parts. The first measured the prevalence of sycophancy among popular AI models, and the second measured user reactions.
It turned out that, on average, AI models endorsed the user's position 49% more often than humans in the same situation. Even when responding to "harmful cues," the models endorsed problematic behavior 47% of the time.
