Happy Nowruz to all who celebrate 🌸

As the vibrant tapestry of spring unfolds, ushering in the season of renewal and rejuvenation, we extend our heartfelt wishes to everyone celebrating Nowruz around the globe.

Some time ago, we reached out to some of our international students to learn how (and why) they celebrate this festival:

💠 Muslimbek Abdurakhimov, Uzbekistan:
In my country, Nowruz is a big celebration that’s all about traditions. Families come together to cook sumalak and spend time together. We also prepare a variety of traditional and national foods such as plov, sumsa, manti, kebabs, and assorted sweets.

💠 Hossain Jafari, Afghanistan:
During Nowruz, my family gathers together to start the new year and wish everyone good health and success. After celebrating the arrival of the New Year with each other in the family, we go around and visit relatives, acquaintances, and close friends.

💠 Zana Sherwani, Iraqi Kurdistan:
The original story of Nowruz is about a cruel king called Zuhak who had two snakes on his shoulder. One day, a skilled ironsmith named Kawa killed the king, ignited a fire, and burnt the snakes, bringing an end to the evil. This fire symbolizes the beginning of a new day (now-ruz).

💠 Akylzhan Kerimbay, Kazakhstan:
Since childhood, I’ve always celebrated Nowruz with my family and it holds a special place in my heart. Nowruz is not just a holiday but a time of joy, unity, and tradition. From the vibrant colors of the decorations to the laughter and warmth shared around the table, every moment is greatly cherished. Hope every one of you will experience the spirit of Nauryz, filled with joy, harmony, and renewal. Наурыз құтты болсын!

⚡️In connection with the events in the Moscow region, we express our condolences to the victims and ask ITMO students and employees to be vigilant, take care of themselves and others.

Mass (cultural, entertainment) events at the university this weekend are going to be canceled or moved online. Classes scheduled on Saturday will take place as scheduled. Why do prospective students choose ITMO? 💭

At the Education and Career International Exhibition in Minsk, Belarus this March, we had the opportunity to ask this question first-hand during a quick chat with a prospective Bachelor’s student Yulia Smirnova.

What program will you be applying to?
I’ve chosen software engineering, namely the Computer Technologies in Design program. What attracted me to it is the freedom to choose the fields I want to study, and the flexibility of my learning track.

How did you find out about ITMO?
I’ve learned about ITMO from Telegram. Also, I’m applying through Rossotrudnichestvo (the Russian Government scholarship). On their website, there was a list of universities and some information about each of them. ITMO caught my attention immediately. I’ve decided to take a look at its website — and I enjoyed it!

We wish Yulia the best of luck and look forward to welcoming her as an ITMO student soon 🫶
