Despite what you’ve heard, mastering Russian doesn’t have to be a headache 🤯
Here are 5 phrases to help you conquer grammar and phonetics:
📚 Russian cases: Use “Иван родил девчонку, велел тащить пеленку” to remember the order of cases (nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, instrumental, prepositional).
🧦 Declension trick: Remember the genitive of носки (socks) vs. чулки (stockings) by the length: socks are shorter – the word is longer (носков), stockings are longer – the word is shorter (чулок).
📝 -Цы, not -Ци: Memorize the few words where Ц is followed by Ы using the phrase: цыган на цыпочках цыпленку цыкнул “цыц” (a gypsy on tiptoe tutted “shh” to a chicken).
🚫 No -ь after sibilants: Recall exceptions like замуж, невтерпёж, уж with the phrase уж замуж невтерпеж (meaning “I can’t wait to get married”).
🤷♂️ Similar words: Differentiate надеть and одеть using the phrase “Надеть одежду, одеть Надежду" (meaning “To put on clothes but to dress Nadezhda”).
👖 Word stress: Use the phrase “Не налезли шо́рты – часто ели то́рты” to remember stress in words like то́рты.
Learning Russian is a journey – don’t hesitate to embrace the quirks!
