10.10.24 A popup message claims the online archive has suffered “a catastrophic security breach,” as its operators fear the worse. Wednesday afternoon, The Verge found a pop-up claiming the site had been hacked.
The popup was gone, but so was the rest of the site, leaving only a placeholder message saying “Internet Archive services are temporarily offline” and directing people to X.

French news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP) suffered a cyber attack that disrupted its content delivery infrastructure and file transfer systems.
Paris-based AFP won the 2020 and 2021 “Best News Agency” award by the Association of International Broadcasters (AIB). It operates English, French, Arabic, Portuguese, and Spanish news channels and employs over 2,400 people in 150 countries.

Facebook reopens facial recognition software to foil scammers
Three years after banning the service over public outrage, Meta has said it will reintroduce testing involving 50,000 public figures to compare profile pictures to suspected scam ads.
If the technology identifies a false representation it will automatically ban the advert deemed to be fake. Celebrities will apparently be allowed to opt out of the trial.
The platform plans to roll the scheme out worldwide from December, except in territories where it doesn’t have jurisdiction, such as the UK, EU, South Korea and some US states including Texas which successfully sued Meta for $1.4 billion for collecting biometric data in August.
