In the life of the Prophet ﷺ, there’s a chapter so poignant that it’s known as the Year of Sorrow.

During this time, he (ﷺ) faced unimaginable personal grief with the passing of two pillars in his life: Khadīja (radiy Allahu ‘anha), his cherished wife of 25 years; and Abu Tālib, his supportive uncle.

Between the 8th and 16th centuries, the Ummah embarked on a celestial odyssey, laying the foundations of modern astronomy. Our ancestors didn't just gaze at the night sky in wonder of Allah’s tremendous creation; they sought to understand it.

Over 70 observatories were constructed with their hands, marking the landscape of knowledge with monuments to their curiosity and intellect. These were institutes of enlightenment, guiding humanity to explore the vastness of the universe.

This illustrious period is a manifestation of the pioneering spirit of our scholars, who charted the Heavens, named stars, and began to unlock the cosmos' secrets. Their contributions remind us that we are part of a tradition that values the pursuit of knowledge as an act of worship.

In their monumental achievements, we find the motivation to build upon our heritage, to innovate, and to shine brightly the future for generations to come.

Dr Asim Qureshi from CAGE, the NGO recently smeared by Michael Gove as "extremist" delivers a masterclass on the new definition of extremism and the "disaster" of its announcement.

We discuss the Labour party's disastrous blunder and its apparent contempt for Muslims, the status of Muslims in the UK, why they're attacking thinkers like Sayyid Qutb, Hassan al-Banna and Mawdudi, as well as the inner workings of the shady Extremism Analysis Unit that's keeping tabs on YOU.

Not only that, but the Islamophobic policymakers have even turned on their own collaborators within the Muslim community! Watch and listen to find out more...

Picture yourself journeying across the hot desert after being promised to perform Umrah by the Prophet ﷺ. You set out with a clear goal in mind, travel all the way from Madina to Makkah, knowing no-one stops pilgrims from reaching the House of Allah, not even the polytheists.

But to your horror, you are met with an obstacle that seems insurmountable. Disappointment, confusion, and unreal hope might affect your judgment.

And this is exactly the situation that the Companions (radiy Allahu ‘anhum) of the Prophet ﷺ found themselves in, before the Treaty of Hudaybiyah was ultimately signed.

The Ummah once illuminated the world with knowledge, advancement, and civilisation, transforming over 100 cities into thriving centres of learning and innovation.

Among these jewels were Baghdad, Damascus, and Cordoba — cities that stood as the racing heart of the world’s most important adventures. They were epicentres of scholarly pursuit, architectural brilliance, and a flourishing culture that embraced unity.

In Baghdad, the House of Wisdom invited scholars from all corners of the Earth. Damascus dazzled with its vibrant markets, while Cordoba illuminated the "Dark Ages" with its libraries and universities.

This special era of the Ummah teaches us that true strength lies in our ability to nurture knowledge, to foster understanding among diverse communities, and to build societies that shine brightly with the light of learning and development.

Let the spirit of Baghdad, Damascus, and Cordoba live on in us as we build our own legacies.

The 13th century unleashed one of the most harrowing chapters in Islamic history.

The Mongol invasions, spearheaded by Genghis Khan and his successors, left a trail of devastation across Central Asia, the Persian plateau, and the Arab heartlands.

Though one is physically confining themselves to a masjid, in reality, it is his heart that he hopes to confine to worship and bring into the devotion of the Divine.

In a world where the natural realm intertwines with our quest for knowledge, the contributions of the Ummah to botany and pharmacology are two examples of scientific endeavour and curiosity.

Among the stars of this legacy stands the Andalusian botanist, Ibn al-Baytār, whose dedication to the plant kingdom documented approximately 900 plants, unveiling their secrets for the welfare of humanity.

His work is more than a mere catalogue of names; it demonstrates the holistic approach of scholarship, where the study of nature goes hand in hand with spiritual and physical wellbeing.

Ibn al-Baytār's exhaustive compilations laid the foundations for modern botany and pharmacology, showcasing the rich intellectual heritage that we, as a part of the Ummah, have inherited.

Indeed, his passion for exploration and his reverence for the natural world is inspirational. In our hands lies the potential to harness this knowledge, to innovate, and to contribute to our communities and beyond.

One of the most profound kinds of grief we can possibly feel is the crushing weight of losing a child, a piece of your heart forever missing. This unimaginable sorrow can shake the very core of our being, leaving us questioning everything we believe in.

Yet, even in the depths of such despair, there are embers of strength waiting to be rekindled. Faith, like a flickering flame, can offer solace and guide us towards eventual peace.
