The IAF said in its investigation that the Iron Dome interception rate of rockets heading for populated areas amid the daylong flare-up was 90.5 percent. Last year, the IDF boasted of a 97% interception rate by Iron Dome.

According to the military, over 100 projectiles — including rockets, mortars, and shoulder-launched missiles fired at Israeli aircraft — were launched from Gaza during the fighting that began Tuesday morning and ended Wednesday morning.

The Iron Dome intercepted 24 of the projectiles. Another 48 projectiles landed in open areas in southern Israel, 14 fell short in Gaza, 11 landed in the sea, and another seven had unknown impact sites, the IDF said.

Police said officers dealt with at least five rocket impact sites in urban areas, some of which landed close to homes.

The Iron Dome has seen similar malfunctions in the past. In May 2021, a technical issue with an Iron Dome battery during a massive rocket barrage toward the coastal city of Ashkelon prevented some rockets from being intercepted and may have been responsible for the deaths of two women and the injury of dozens of people.

The IDF says that since the beginning of the war, some 9,500 rockets and mortars, as well as dozens of drones, have been fired at Israel, mostly from the Gaza Strip https://perma.cc/8N2K-QCWG

Some 900 rockets were launched from within civilian sites, including mosques, schools, hospitals and cultural centers. Around 12% of the rockets fell short inside the Gaza Strip, according to the IDF data.

Some 2,000 projectiles have been intercepted by the IDF’s air defense systems — the short-range Iron Dome, medium-range David’s Sling and Patriot, and long-range Arrow.

Many rockets landed in open areas, while some hit civilian sites, causing casualties. The IDF does not provide an interception rate, but the Iron Dome has previously been reported to have an estimated 95% success rate of downing rockets heading for populated areas.

During the first four hours of Hamas’s shock onslaught on southern Israel on October 7, some 3,000 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel, according to the IDF data. For comparison, during the entire 2014 Gaza War, which lasted 50 days, some 4,000 rockets were fired in total.

An air defense system consists of three key components. First, there are radars to detect, identify and track incoming missiles. The range of these radars varies. Iron Dome’s radar is effective over distances of 2.5 to 43.5 miles (4 to 70 km), according to its manufacturer Raytheon. Once an object has been detected by the radar, it must be assessed to determine whether it is a threat. Israel has at least 10 Iron Dome batteries in operation, each containing 60 to 80 interceptor missiles. Each of those missiles costs about US$60,000. In previous attacks involving smaller numbers of missiles and rockets, Iron Dome was 90% effective against a range of threats.
