The Once Great Forests of Ireland

Ireland was once 80% forest, but now is one of the least forested countries in Europe. The lost forests were once home to wolves, wild boar and even lynx. All of these creatures are gone now, with the last wolf shot in Carlow in 1786. In olden times a squirrel could travel from Cork to Killarney, Co Kerry, without once touching the ground, such was the extent of woodland.

Accounts of the military campaigns of the English forces of Queen Elizabeth I at the end of the 16th century made it quite clear that Irish forests were a considerable natural barrier to troop movements as well as a place for concealment and refuge for the Irish armies.

The last of the great forests were deliberately burned down by the English military as part of a "Scorched Earth" campaign under commanders such as Walter Devereux, Richard Bingham and Humphrey Gilbert.
