🔹Word order in English sentences with two objects🔹

✅ If there are two objects in a sentence, the normal word order is:

person → thing

Example:

I must give my sister a book.

I gave Mandy the letter.

I gave her the letter.

🔴 If the thing is a pronoun, it is put behind the verb.

I must give it to her.

🔹 If we want to emphasize the person, we put the person after the thing. Then we use the preposition to.

Let's write the letter to John in California.

🔹 Using the words describe, explain, report and say – we always put the person after the thing. Then we use the preposition to.

I explain this rule to you.

☑️ Verbs with two objects ☑️

Many verbs can be followed by two objects – one indirect and one direct object. The indirect object usually refers to a person, and comes first.

💢 I gave him a watch for his birthday.

💢 Could you send me the report?

💢 I will lend you some money.

💢 Let me get you some coffee.

💢She told me a story.

Certain verbs cannot be followed by the structure indirect object + direct object. Examples are: explain, suggest or describe.

I would like you to explain this theory to me. (NOT I would like you to explain me this theory.)

💢Can you suggest a good cardiologist to me? (NOT Can you suggest me a good cardiologist?)

💢Please describe your job to me. (NOT Please describe me your job.)

Some verbs can be followed by either a direct object or an indirect object, or both.

💢I asked Peter. (Here the verb asked is followed by an indirect object.)

💢I asked a question. (Here the verb asked is followed by a direct object.)

💢I asked Peter a question. (Here the verb asked is followed by both a direct object and an indirect object.)

Other verbs that can be used like this are: teach, tell, pay, show, sing, playand write.

💢He taught me a lesson.

When the verbs sing, play and write have no direct object, we put the preposition to before the indirect object.

Compare:

💢Write me a letter. (NOT Write to me a letter.) (To is not used when write is followed by a direct object.)

💢Write to me. (NOT Write me.) (Here we use the preposition to because the verb write is not followed by a direct object.)

1. Some verbs have two objects –an indirect object and a direct object:

🔹Subject Verb Indirect object Direct object

💢My wife sent me an email.

💢He brought his mother some flowers.

💢He cooked all his friends a delicious meal

🔹These clauses have the structure: V + N (indirect object) + N (direct object)

2. We can use a prepositional phrase with to or for with an indirect object:

🔹Subject Verb Direct object Prepositional phrase

💢My wife sent an email to me.

💢 He brought some flowers for his mother

💢He cooked a delicious meal for all his friends.

🔹These clauses have the structure : V + N (direct object) + Prepositional phrase (indirect object)

3. Common verbs with for and an indirect object are:

book

buy

get

cook

keep

bring

make

pour

save

find

💢They booked a table for me at the restaurant.

💢We made toys for all the children.

4. Common verbs with to and an indirect object are:

give

lend

offer

pass

post

read

sell

send

show

promise

tell

💢He gave his programme to the man sitting next to him.

💢They sent Christmas cards to all their customers.

5. If the indirect object is a long phrase we normally use to or for:

💢He showed his ticket to the policeman standing by the door.

💢We kept something to eat and drink for all the people who arrived late.

6. If the indirect object is a pronoun we normally use the N + V + N + N pattern:

💢I poured him another drink.

💢 Their mother read them another story.

Although more and more people read news on the Internet, newspapers will remain the most important source of news. Do you agree or disagree?

Internet has become an influential medium of information. However, I believe nothing can replace newspapers as the primary source of news.

Firstly, in many parts of the world there is no access to internet. To provide network coverage governments need to invest massive funds in their telecommunication infrastructure, this means that many developing and underdeveloped countries are deprived of this modern means of communication. Moreover, some people, even in countries with flourishing economies, cannot afford to buy a device with an internet connection such as a laptop or a smartphone. Therefore, a large number of people will not be able to access news on the internet.

Secondly, the news printed in a newspaper is far more reliable than online news. Newspapers, and other forms of print media in general, recruit professional editorial teams, from reporters to graphists and columnists and so on, so the reader can rely on the information he or she has obtained, while it is not the case with online news. What is broadcast online is often disclaimed later on, and it is not easy to distinguish between hoaxes, fake news and authentic accounts.

Finally, the physical form of broadcasting news through a newspaper will still be favored by many. As there are people who prefer to hold a broadsheet with their hands, and these readers refuse to abandon their beloved newspapers for a modern gadget.

In conclusion, despite the growing trend toward online media, I think newspapers will continue to hold their place as the main way for people to find information.

Beyond any doubt unequal wealth distribution and the consequent problems have kept scholars contemplating over the course of modern history. I think it is the responsibility of a government to address the issue, while the poor should also make efforts in this regard, and the rich can contribute to the wellbeing of their fellow men through a fair taxing system as well as voluntary charity activities.

Firstly, when tax revenues are collected and spent fairly and rationally life quality will inevitably improve for everyone. It is only justifiable that the higher income groups should be taxed on the wealth they have accumulated since they have earned it using the resources of their society, either directly or indirectly, which are the shared property of all members of that respective society. Also, in order to maintain the conditions in which one can turn a profit, those earning high amounts rely on a competent and effective workforce, therefore helping the less fortunate ones eventually benefits the economy of a society as a whole.

However, forcing the rich to undertake the task of improving living standards for the unprivileged has no logical ground. A national tax system means that individuals can pay their share of the costs and not get directly involved in the problems, as problems on a national scale often require experts, organizations and long-term planning to resolve. But if one wishes to make donations and support humanitarian, charitable causes then why not accept it.

Furthermore, a person suffering from poor living conditions also needs to feel responsible and do whatever it takes to make a change and set their life on the upwardly mobile path. Self-improvement can be possible in many ways including education.

In conclusion, I believe the responsibility falls on the governments’ shoulder to try and tackle people’s main problems through public services.
