What devices will be compatible with ๐ฑ 19
๐ฑ According to a report from French website iPhoneSoft, all iPhone models that are compatible with iOS 18 will also support iOS 19, meaning that devices all the way back to the iPhone XS/XR and second-generation iPhone SE will be able to run the next major update of iOS coming next year, BUT certain features will undoubtedly be limited to more recent models.
๐ฑ The report also claims the vast majority of iPad models compatible with iPadOS 18 will similarly be able to run iPadOS 19, with the exception of the seventh-generation iPad that was released in September 2019 and discontinued a year later.

๐ฐ Apple to pay $95 million to settle claims it used Siri to eavesdrop on customers
๐ต๏ธโโ๏ธ Apple has agreed to pay $95 million to settle a civil lawsuit accusing the privacy-minded company of deploying its virtual assistant Siri to eavesdrop on people using its iPhone and other trendy devices.
โน๏ธ The proposed settlement filed Tuesday in an Oakland, California, federal court would resolve a 5-year-old lawsuit revolving around allegations that Apple surreptitiously activated Siri to record conversations through iPhones and other devices equipped with the virtual assistant for more than a decade.
๐ The alleged recordings occurred even when people didn't seek to activate the virtual assistant with the trigger words, "Hey, Siri." Some of the recorded conversations were then shared with advertisers in an attempt to sell their products to consumers more likely to be interested in the goods and services, the lawsuit asserted.
Well, how else does it happen that magically, after your conversation with a friend about getting a new bike, pop-up ads about โthe best bikes in townโ appear?
๐ โโ๏ธ Apple denies any violation of the law and does not admit to the charges. However, to avoid additional legal fees, the company has agreed to settle the lawsuit.
๐ฉโโ๏ธ The agreement to settle the Siri spying lawsuit has received preliminary court approval.
๐ค All current or former owners of Siri devices in the U.S. whose private messages were obtained by Apple between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024, may receive compensation.
๐ธ A website will be set up within 45 days to determine who is eligible. Apple is required to provide contact information for customers who purchased devices with Siri. Claims can be submitted until May 15, 2025, after which compensation will begin.
๐ช Each participant will be able to file a claim for up to five Siri devices, receiving up to $20 for each. The payout amount will depend on the number of valid claims.

๐ฐ Appleโs $1 billion offer not enough to lift Indonesiaโs ban
Ban iPhone 16 in Indonesia persists, even after Apple's $1 billion investment offer and factory construction.
๐ฐ According to Reuters, Indonesian Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita met with Apple's Vice President of Global Government Affairs Nick Ammann on January 7 to discuss Apple's investment proposal.
๐ญ It is known that the planned factory in Indonesia will be designed for the assembly of AirTag and will begin operations next year. When discussing Apple's $1 billion investment in the local industry, Indonesia's industry minister couldn't get enough:
โ he said.
๐ฑ Thus, Apple will not be allowed to sell the iPhone 16 (and newer models, apparently, too) in Indonesia until it realizes local production of iPhone components, as well as secures an industry investment of at least $115 million/year. These are the requirements of the local regulator, which Apple has been trying to fight since the end of 2024.

Apple has issued a statement saying it is protecting Siri user data.
๐ก Against the backdrop of Apple's concluded legal battle over the โSiri wiretappingโ case, which began back in 2019 and ended in December last year with a settlement with compensation with no expression of grievance from the victims, the company has issued a statement. The statement, published on Apple's website, details exactly how Siri protects user data.
๐ It says that โprivacy is a foundational part of the design process, driven by principles that include data minimization, on-device intelligence, transparency and control, and strong security protections that work together to provide users with incredible experiences and peace of mind.โ
Apple has never used Siri data to build marketing profiles, never made it available for advertising, and never sold it to anyone for any purpose. We are constantly developing technologies to make Siri even more private, and will continue to do so.

๐ค Mark Zuckerberg criticized Apple for its lack of innovation and strict third-party developer rules
โ said the founder, chairman and CEO of Meta.
๐บ In a nearly three-hour-long episode of the Joe Rogan Podcast on Friday that covered a wide range of topics, Zuckerberg also praised Apple, saying, โThe iPhone is probably one of the most important inventions of all time.โ
๐ But he noted Appleโs decline in iPhone sales as people wait to upgrade their phones. (After a recent slump, iPhone sales jumped 6% year over year in its fiscal fourth quarter.)
๐ซ In an effort to offset the companyโs lack of product innovation, he said that Apple is โsqueezing peopleโ for money and pointed to the 30% commission Apple charges on app developers using its payment systems. Additionally, Zuckerberg claimed the company makes it difficult for third-party plug-ins to have success on iPhone devices:
โ he said.
๐ Zuckerberg recalled frustrations surrounding his desire to have the Ray-Ban Meta Advanced Smart Glasses easily connect to the iPhone. He went on to say that Apple allows its products to connect seamlessly to any Apple device, while leaving competitors in the dark about its connection protocol.
โ Zuckerberg said.
๐ฌ Do you agree with Mark or not?

They havenโt invented anything great in a while. Itโs like Steve Jobs invented the iPhone, and now theyโre just kind of sitting on it 20 years later,
โ said the founder, chairman and CEO of Meta.
They build stuff like Airpods which are cool, but theyโve thoroughly hamstrung the ability for anyone else to build something that can connect to the iPhone in the same way,
โ he said.

I mean the good news about the tech industry is itโs like itโs just super dynamic and things are constantly getting invented. I think companies, if you just donโt do a good job for like 10 years, eventually youโre just going to get beat by someone.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman shared a fresh article on Apple's upcoming updates.
According to the insider, Apple plans to unveil a new home center โHomePadโ in March, but sales could start much later. That's because the device's system (codenamed Pebble) is closely tied to Apple Intelligence's App Intents features, which will only appear in iOS 18.4, meaning the device itself won't be available for sale until the system's release, which is April at the earliest.
More features for the โHomePadโ with Apple Intelligence and for other devices in the ecosystem will launch with the โLLM Siriโ under development, which will launch in iOS 19, with full access in iOS 19.4 (spring 2026).
The device will be released in 2026, but could be announced later this year. Meanwhile, active production of a new spatial computer with an M5 chip inside could also begin later this year. And at the moment, the more important goal for the company is to release a cheaper version of the Vision Pro.
These are in the early stages of design, they will NOT be released in the next year.
The basic 11th generation iPad may have a simplified A17 Pro chip with 5 GPU cores and 8GB of RAM โ just like the iPad mini (A17 Pro) already has. This way, the company will be able to provide the basic tablet with Apple Intelligence support. The iPad 11 is expected to be released in the spring, along with the iPhone SE4 (aka iPhone 16E).

๐ป Dell shamelessly copies Apple in major PC rebrand
๐ฐ The new approach of Dell is branding its computers as โDell,โ โDell Proโ and โDell Pro Max,โ depending on their configurations.
๐ It doesnโt take a marketing expert to see this as a page from Appleโs playbook. During Dellโs briefing with reporters on the change, the company said it made the move because of a positive consumer response to the terminology. Thatโs no surprise given the popularity of the iPhone and how long Apple has been using this naming strategy.
๐ป To be fair to Dell โ no matter how shameless the move may be โ Apple doesnโt own those terms. And the tech industry is rife with similar nomenclature. Both Apple and Samsung use the Plus or + suffix on their larger phone offerings, and plenty of companies use โProโ in their names. (Itโs worth noting that Apple adopted the โUltraโ designation for its high-end chips and watches years after Samsung started using it.)
