🇪🇺 Apple users in the EU will get more customization options for system settings with iOS 18

Apple announced that this fall users in the European Union under the provisions of the DMA Act, will have new options for choosing a default browser and the ability to uninstall more apps:

🧭 Safari, 💬 Messages, 📷 Photos, 📸 Camera, 🛍App Store and 🔑 Passwords.

This way, only 📞 Phone and ⚙️ Settings may remain in the system.

✔️ Apple will also allow users in the EU to choose new variations to default to other features:
on phone calls, spam-filtering calls, messaging (for example, with the option to choose Telegram as the primary means of communication), Photo and Camera (with the option to choose a different Camera and Media Storage app as the primary one).

🔐 Customization will also affect password managers (integration into the system from other services), keyboards, navigation (the ability to choose any other navigation service as the primary instead of Apple Maps) and translators (both a separately app and at the level of the entire system).

⚙️ To customize all apps at will, Apple will add a "Default Apps" section to Settings. This will list all the settings for each option and the apps available for control. There users will also be able to disable/enable App Store as the default app store. All system applications can be restored from the same App Store if desired. And the first time the device is launched, a new interface for selecting a default browser instead of Safari will be presented.

🔧 Developers will soon get tools to adapt their services and apps to the innovations in the EU. Later, the company will announce details for accessing the default installation of apps and services on the system. Some of the features will be available to users by the end of this year, and another part in early 2025.

📰 Ahead of every iPhone launch, retail staff are called in for training on the new products. This year there’s a slight difference. Rather than the typical weekend appointments, Apple will be briefing staff this Thursday and Friday. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman notes the new dates on 𝕏:

Apple has scheduled an unusual and mandatory meeting for employees at all Apple retail stores for the evening of Sept 12 or morning of Sept 13. This would be ahead of the iPhone 16 release a week later — but pre launch meetings are typically held on Sundays not during the week.

🎧 AirPods Pro 3 with 'much better' ANC and AirPods 4 (with no ANC)

A new 𝕏 "prediction" seems to suggest two different additions to the AirPods that Apple might unveil in the near future.

First Kosutami Ito claims that "new AirPods Pro" are coming "soon" with "much better" digital Active Noise Cancellation compared to the current edition of Apple's best wireless earbuds.

Second but just as important (if not more so) for the company's cash-strapped fans, the "AirPods 4th generation" are also expected to break cover "soon" with no active noise cancellation and no word on features or capabilities at all right now.

Name Kosutami Ito might not ring as many bells or sound as reputable as Mark Gurman or Ming-Chi Kuo, but as 𝕏 leakers go, this is neither the most trustworthy account out there, nor the shadiest.

In short, there's a good chance Apple will indeed unveil two new pairs of earbuds soon even if it's probably not smart to take that prediction for granted.

📱 The new iPad mini 7 might be revealed as early as September 9 at the Apple Event

While Apple refreshed the iPad Pro and the iPad Air in May 2024, the iPad mini is still in need of an update. Apple last introduced a new ‌iPad mini‌ in September 2021, so it's overdue for an overhaul.

What to expect:

・cut down on "jelly scrolling"

📱 What is special about the iPhone 17 Pro Max

📰 Chinese analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed what unique specs the iPhone 17 Pro Max will have. The first difference from the rest of the 2025 lineup is 12GB of DRAM memory (while the iPhone 17 Slim/Air, iPhone 17, iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and SE4 will have 8GB). The main argument in favor of more RAM on the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be the new Apple Intelligence features, so it will work much faster and more efficiently.

💨 The second notable difference will be the upgraded cooling system, combining vapor chamber (VC) technology and graphite sheets. That said, all iPhone 17s are expected to have a 2nm process chip with new neural cores - again, all for the sake of Apple Intelligence. In other words: all other iPhone models in 2025 will continue to heat up at the same level, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max will cool down faster.

📱 According to the Chinese insider, the strategy of differentiating devices in the lineup by providing better specs (in addition to a larger display size than the Pro) for the Pro Max will continue in both the 17 and 18 iPhone models.

🎵 Apple Music now lets you transfer playlists and media library to YouTube Music

➡️ To transfer your media library, you will need an active subscription to both Apple Music and YouTube Music.

🖥 On Apple's website, you'll need to go to “Data and Privacy” page, then sign in to your Apple ID account and then select “Transfer a copy of your data.”

🕐 The process can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the number of tracks.

🧠 Enabling Apple Intelligence outside the US

🗺 With the third beta of iOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1, which was released to developers, Apple has changed the release notes for the updates. Whereas previously the release notes said that the device region had to be set to the US, the notes for beta 3 only mention that users must set Siri to the US English language.

📰 9to5Mac can confirm that it’s now possible to try out Apple Intelligence features just by changing Siri’s language and the device language to US English, without changing the region settings. Changing the region of the device can affect things like the format of phone numbers and calendar.

✏️ Of course, features like Writing Tools and Summarization still only work in English, but the change will certainly be welcomed by those who don’t live in the US but still want to take a look at Apple Intelligence’s features.

📱 P.S. Users in the EU and China are still unable to activate Apple Intelligence. Another thing to keep in mind is that the hardware requirements for Apple Intelligence remain the same: iPhone 15 Pro or later, or iPads and Macs with the M1 chip or later.

💰 Apple is going to invest in OpenAI

📰 According to sources, negotiations are underway for a major deal. The investment would be part of a new OpenAI fundraising round that would value the ChatGPT maker above $100 billion, The Wall Street Journal said. However, the exact amount of investment from Apple is not yet known.

🪙 In addition to Apple, other major players, such as venture capital firm Thrive Capital and OpenAI's longtime partner Microsoft, are also interested in participating in the round.
