💸 Apple is finally going to open up iPhone tap-to-pay

📰 Apple has announced a new NFC API for payment from iOS apps. Starting with iOS 18.1, developers will be able to offer contactless NFC transactions using Secure Element from their own iPhone apps, separate from Apple Pay and Wallet. Using the new NFC and Secure Element APIs, developers will be able to offer contactless in-app transactions for in-store payments, car keys, corporate keys, ID cards, house keys, hotel keys, loyalty and rewards cards, and event tickets will be supported with the new integration.

✍🏻 To incorporate this new solution into their iPhone apps, developers will need to enter into a commercial agreement with Apple, request the right to NFC and SE and pay the appropriate fees.

🌐 The NFC and SE APIs will be available to developers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the UK and the US.

📸 All four new iPhone 16 Pro colors revealed in a new leak

Leaker Sonny Dickson is back with a new dummy unit image showing all four iPhone 16 Pro color variants, including the rose gold or "bronze" unit that replaces Blue Titanium in the existing iPhone 15 Pro models. Due to the fact that Apple did not include a gold option in the iPhone 15 lineup, so a similar variant could see heightened demand.

One rumor suggests that Apple is using an improved process for finishing and coloring titanium, which will result in a glossier look than the brushed aluminum finish of the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ models. The glossy finish could look much more like the stainless steel that Apple used in prior years, but it will be more resistant to scratches.

The official color names are still unknown, but Apple may choose to stick with the Titanium colorway branding it used for the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ models.

Dickson has already revealed the colors for the standard ‌iPhone 16‌ models earlier.

🇮🇳 iPhone 16 Pro models to be assembled in India for the first time

Apple looks to diversify production beyond China, according to Bloomberg. The company has reportedly been considering producing its high-end iPhone Pro models in India for the last couple of years, and has now decided to manufacture the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max models in India.

Initially, the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models will be imported into the country, but Apple will start local assembly for both the domestic market and exports shortly after launch in mid-September, once the new product introduction (NPI) process is complete.

Training is said to be already underway for thousands of workers at Foxconn's factory in southern Tamil Nadu state as it rushes to produce the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models as close to the global launch as possible.

Last year, Apple had India-made iPhone 15 models ready on launch day, with locally made ‌iPhone 15‌ Plus models becoming available shortly after.

📆 The release of Apple's first foldable iPad/MacBook has been delayed until 2027 or 2028

It was previously reported that Apple's first foldable device with a flexible screen would be released in the second quarter of 2026 and would have a 20.3-inch display.

Now, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, this device will be a hybrid of iPad and MacBook with a screen diagonal of 18.8 inches in the unfolded form. Details about the operating system of such a device are not yet available.

Next, Apple may release a foldable iPhone in flip format. Most likely, it will be announced together with the iPhone 17, but the actual market launch will take place not earlier than 2027.

📱 targets September 10 debut for new iPhones, AirPods and Watches

This timing would mean that new iPhones reach stores on September 20.

Though the timing hasn’t yet been announced, the company is making preparations for that date, which falls on a Tuesday, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans are private. The unveiling will be followed by the phones going on sale Sept. 20, in line with Apple’s typical approach in recent years.

It's known that on the second Tuesday of September Apple will show off:

・iPhone 16/16 Plus
・iPhone 16 Pro/16 Pro Max
・Apple Watch Series 10
・Apple Watch Ultra 3
・AirPods 4th generation in two variations

The presentation will also announce the release date for iOS 18, macOS 15 Sequoia and other systems. More Apple Intelligence features will be announced for new devices in October with the iOS/iPadOS 18.1 update, as previously revealed.

The new Macs with the M4 chip, on the other hand, will be unveiled a month later. According to Mark Gurman, the company is actively testing four new computers. All of them are on Apple M4 chips, but three of them have 10 GPU/CPU cores, and one budget version has only 8 CPU cores, which is usual for budget modifications. All computers have 16 or 32 GB of combined memory each.

🇪🇺 Apple users in the EU will get more customization options for system settings with iOS 18

Apple announced that this fall users in the European Union under the provisions of the DMA Act, will have new options for choosing a default browser and the ability to uninstall more apps:

🧭 Safari, 💬 Messages, 📷 Photos, 📸 Camera, 🛍App Store and 🔑 Passwords.

This way, only 📞 Phone and ⚙️ Settings may remain in the system.

✔️ Apple will also allow users in the EU to choose new variations to default to other features:
on phone calls, spam-filtering calls, messaging (for example, with the option to choose Telegram as the primary means of communication), Photo and Camera (with the option to choose a different Camera and Media Storage app as the primary one).

🔐 Customization will also affect password managers (integration into the system from other services), keyboards, navigation (the ability to choose any other navigation service as the primary instead of Apple Maps) and translators (both a separately app and at the level of the entire system).

⚙️ To customize all apps at will, Apple will add a "Default Apps" section to Settings. This will list all the settings for each option and the apps available for control. There users will also be able to disable/enable App Store as the default app store. All system applications can be restored from the same App Store if desired. And the first time the device is launched, a new interface for selecting a default browser instead of Safari will be presented.

🔧 Developers will soon get tools to adapt their services and apps to the innovations in the EU. Later, the company will announce details for accessing the default installation of apps and services on the system. Some of the features will be available to users by the end of this year, and another part in early 2025.
