βš™οΈ Apple set to replace Qualcomm with in-house 5G chips in two 2025 iPhones

Apple has been working on its own cellular modems for years and according to the post on 𝕏 by Ming-Chi Kuo, it seems the company is finally ready to move its 5G chips in-house in 2025.

Apple’s plan is for a phased adoption of its own in-house 5G chips. Rather than switching all new iPhone models to its proprietary modems in 2025, the company plans to use them in only two models:

β€’ the iPhone SE 4, which will release in the spring;
β€’ the new ultra-slim iPhone 17 model that will debut in the fall.

Bringing Apple’s own 5G chips to only two devices means the other new 2025 iPhones will still utilize Qualcomm’s 5G chips, as all modern iPhones up until this point have done.

It makes a lot of sense to only add the new 5G chips to certain iPhone models at first. However, if the iPhone SE 4 gets the new in-house modem in the spring, it will be kind of odd for the high-end iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max to stick with Qualcomm nearly half a year later.

P.S. The Qualcomm Snapdragon modems are a series of 4G LTE, LTE Advanced, LTE Advanced Pro, and 5G NR modems found in many phones, tablets, laptops, watches and even cars. The company develops software, semiconductor designs, patented intellectual property, development tools and services, but does not manufacture physical products like phones or infrastructure equipment.

πŸ€– Long-awaited Apple Intelligence not to launch in September

πŸ“° Apple Intelligence will miss its initial expected launch date to give Apple more time to fix bugs, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.

πŸ“† The company now plans to start rolling out Apple Intelligence in software updates by October, arriving several weeks after the launch of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. This means that Apple Intelligence will now effectively be split out of the initial launch of the new software updates. So, that explains why no beta version of iOS 18 can still at least partially try out the new feature.

πŸ”§ The reason for the delay is said to be concern about the stability of Apple Intelligence features and need for developers to have sufficient testing time. Gurman notes that the new release strategy for Apple Intelligence means that the iPhone 16 lineup will likely launch without Apple Intelligence features and require a software update to obtain them at a later date.

πŸ”œ The company is now said to be aiming to have development of iOS 18.0 completed by the end of July.

πŸ—Ί Even when Apple Intelligence arrives with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and β€ŒmacOS Sequoiaβ€Œ 15.1, it will be missing aspects such as the overhauled version of Siri that uses on-device data to answer questions and understands what is on a user's screen. These features are expected to arrive in the first half of 2025.

πŸ’¬ What is the most expected feature of Apple Intelligence for you?

πŸ†• Apple releases iOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1 developer beta with the first β€˜Apple Intelligence’ features

πŸ“± The new beta is only available on iPhone 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max, and iPads and Macs with M1 chips and newer.

βš™οΈ Inside the first Apple Intelligence features! Users have to join a waitlist from the Settings menu of their device and wait for a notification that it’s ready for them to test new features, including Siri. You can finally see the new animation when the assistant launches, and in the Settings Welcome Screen after successful activation there is an option to switch between voice and text communication, just double tap at the bottom of the display to bring up the keyboard. It works only in English so far and fully functional only in the US.

πŸ€– The assistant also supports context between queries. But so far there is no integration with ChatGPT or any other AI service. At the same time, the new Siri has an inbuilt Apple Support database and can answer questions about the operation of certain iPhone functions.

πŸ“± More features in iOS 18.1 beta 1

πŸ–Š Typing with Apple Intelligence
Text editing works in test mode. Check out the full review on the feature here. It only works in English for now.

🀫 New β€˜Reduce Interruptions’ mode
This is a focus related to Apple Intelligence. The AI on your device automatically analyses the content of notifications and shows you only important notifications.

πŸ“ Phone call recording
The feature is activated after pressing a special button during a call, then follows a phrase that the call will be recorded and recording starts. After the recording is over, it goes to the Notes app, where you can listen to it and even transcribe it (it doesn't work with all languages). The function is generally available everywhere.

βœ‰οΈ Highlighting important in Mail
Apple Intelligence reads the context and highlights an email if it might contain important information.

πŸ“Έ Make the iPhone bright again

Insider Sonny Dixon posted in his 𝕏 photos of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro in all the expected colors.

Apparently, the base version will be available in five colors:
Black, White, Blue, Green and Pink.

The iPhone 16 dummy units shown off in this new image further corroborate the colors Ming-Chi Kuo reported earlier.

As for the Pro version, there is White Titanium, Natural Titanium, and Black Titanium. Based on this image, the iPhone 16 Pro’s Black Titanium option will be significantly darker than the iPhone 15 Pro.

Notably, however, the image omits the Rose Titanium color for the iPhone 16 Pro that other insiders told of earlier.

As previously reported, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will get an A18 chip, 8GB of RAM, a new Capture button and an Action button like the iPhone 15 Pro. The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will get the A18 Pro chip, updated cameras, a new Capture button and a larger display.

πŸ”œ The new models will be announced in September along with the new Apple Watch.

πŸ€– New Siri can't help pleasing but still there's much to handle

New Siri animation
A colorful animation emanating from the edges of your phone. It does this on iPhone, iPad, and even when using CarPlay. This light reacts to your voice, moving like an on-screen visualizer. If you invoke Siri using the side button, the animation sprawls out from that top-right corner while if you use your voice or the keyboard, it comes in from the edges.

Speaking of the keyboard, this too is new. With a double-tap at the bottom of your phone screen, a keyboard will appear to type Siri your questions.

Better understanding
Siri can manage when you stumble! "Can you check the weather tomorrow, actually, no, check it for Tuesday in Cupertino" will return the correct answer while asking on the legacy version of Siri gives a range of weather info.
Similarly, if you say "set a timer for three hours, wait I meant set an alarm for three," the old Siri somehow set a timer for about 5 hours while the new Siri correctly set an alarm for 3PM.

Contextual awareness
Siri's also able to retain context between queries. It works for anything that has follow up context. In the home, you can ask Siri to turn off the bedroom lights and follow it up by saying "and the living room ones too."

Compounded questions still elude Apple's voice assistant though. If you try to combine two questions into one, it only is able to answer one.

Product knowledge
You can ask things like "how do I send a message later?," or "how to I fix a photo when someone is blinking" and Siri will show you step-by-step instructions on how to do it. But many other questions of this type don't work fully yet. However, when the feature does work, it's very handy.

ChatGPT is coming to Siri later this year

πŸ”œ Together all of these are poised to deliver a vastly improved Siri. Only time will tell if it is ultimately enough.

🧠 Now people can control Apple Vision Pro with their minds

Through integration with the neurotechnology computer (BCI) startup Synchron, Apple Vision Pro can be controlled by the user through direct brain commands.

The patient controlled the cursor on the Vision Pro to play solitaire and send text messages without using his hands. Six people have already undergone the same tests, suggesting some kind of pattern.

Synchron's neuro-computer detects the brain's motor intentions and wirelessly transmits those signals to external devices, enabling hands-free control.

The company is already preparing for larger clinical trials to bring the product to the mass market.
