The lecture focused on negativity bias, our tendency to focus more on negative experiences than positive ones, since negative emotions are stronger, and longer-lasting. Indeed, such sensitivity, given its evolutionary significance, helped our ancestors respond quickly to danger and survive. Although modern threats have diminished, negativity bias still shapes how people perceive risks and opportunities, making awareness important for a balanced perspective. (62w) #SST

While multi-method research is experiencing a surge of popularity, there are reasons to worry about whether multi-method applications are producing more grounded, justified, and persuasive inferences than single-method studies. These concerns arise from the 'triangulation' framework as prototypical research design for multi-method social science. Simply put, triangulation designs involve asking the same causal inference question using two different methods, checking same substantive conclusions. The metaphor is to the geometric technique of estimating distance by measuring the angle of sight toward an object from two different vantage points.
Triangulation in social sciences has major flaws. One is well-known and widely discussed: what conclusion should be drawn when the two methods produce different findings? Unfortunately, the list of intellectually plausible responses to such an outcome is all but unbounded.
For example, a scholar could reasonably conclude that both findings are correct but capture different aspects of the phenomenon of interest; that one method or the other displayed fundamental limitations in the analysis; that the divergence provides evidence against the credibility of the assumptions involved in both methods; that the outcome involves a contrast in terms of scope or relevant populations for the two methods; or that the failure to triangulate simply leaves the inference in a state of uncertainty. In decades of writing about triangulation, no definitive guidance has yet emerged about how to respond to divergent findings between the multiple methods in a study.

Although triangulation employs multiple methods to investigate social science phenomena, inconsistent yet plausible findings can undermine confidence in the justification and persuasiveness of inferences drawn from multi-method studies relative to single-method approaches.

You are on your way to campus to deliver a presentation when a fallen tree blocks the road, preventing you from arriving on time. You call your professor to ask if it would be possible to reschedule your presentation for later, or allow another student to present first. What would you say?

While artificial intelligence becomes so advanced, people can use computers to translate foreign languages. That makes learning a foreign language unnecessary. To what extent do you agree with it?

Narration: three students are discussing the new experience at university.
Speaker1: Hey everyone! Can’t believe we’ve been at university for a month already. How’s everyone feeling about it? I come from a small town where there wasn’t much to do, mostly just watching movies or playing football with friends. But now that I’m here in the big city, everything feels so fresh and exciting.
Speaker2: University life doesn’t bring huge changes to me because I spent high school years in a big city. Students in high school organized activities and gatherings, but I wasn’t of the outgoing type and seldom went out. I didn’t enjoy social or entertainment activities.
Speaker3: That is interesting. Personally, I believe the biggest challenge for freshmen is keeping a sensible balance between countless university activities and academic study. There are so many events both on campus and off campus, and many new students easily get overwhelmed by them.
Speaker1: Exactly. Now that I have moved to this big city, almost everything around me feels incredibly fresh and exciting. There are concerts, exhibitions and social events I could never access in my small hometown. I am eager to explore as much as I possibly can.
Speaker2: To be honest, I rarely took part in those high school social or entertainment events. They never really appealed to me. My daily routine here works in my own way. I tend to go out and hang out with people during weekdays when my study pressure is relatively light.
Speaker3: A lot of my classmates burn themselves out from too many activities. They end up feeling worn out, with little energy left to review lessons or finish homework. Some of them can only catch up on proper rest during weekends or official holidays.
Speaker1: Still, I realize there is a hidden risk. It is surprisingly easy for newcomers like me to get distracted by all these brand new attractions in the city. I have to remind myself frequently not to neglect my schoolwork while enjoying city life.
Speaker2: I save most of my homework, laundry and house chores for weekends. If there is an invitation, I may join my friends’ parties on Saturday nights. It serves as a nice little break after a full week of classes and casual outings.
Speaker3: My strategy is to finish all my urgent study tasks immediately after class before I go out for fun. This way, I make sure important school assignments will never get delayed. Even so, I run into my own trouble, and I only plan short breaks, yet these breaks often stretch out and become far longer than expected.
