🏦 Functions of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)

Monetary Authority: Formulates and implements monetary policy to maintain price stability while supporting economic growth.

Regulator & Supervisor of Banks: Regulates banks, NBFCs and certain financial institutions to ensure the stability of the financial system.

Issuer of Currency: Sole authority to issue banknotes in India (except ₹1 note and coins, which are issued by the Government of India).

Banker to the Government: Manages the banking transactions, public debt and cash balances of the Central and State Governments.

Banker's Bank & Lender of Last Resort: Maintains banks' accounts, provides liquidity support and acts as the lender of last resort during financial stress.

Manager of Foreign Exchange: Manages India's foreign exchange reserves and administers the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999.

Regulator of Payment & Settlement Systems: Ensures safe, secure and efficient payment systems such as UPI, RTGS and NEFT.

Developmental Role: Promotes financial inclusion, strengthens financial markets and supports institutions that contribute to economic development.

Uzbekistan Becomes 11th Country to Welcome UPI.

NPCI International and Uzbekistan’s NIPC have entered into a partnership to enable UPI payments across Uzbekistan, a finance ministry statement said.

NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India, entered into a commercial agreement with National Interbank Processing Centre JSC (NIPC), operator of Uzbekistan’s national payment system, HUMO, on August 30, 2026, the ministry said.

The partnership will enable Indian tourists, business travellers and students to make instant merchant payments by scanning Uzbekistan's national interoperable QR code, UZQR.

UPI is currently accepted in 10 countries -- Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, and Greece.
