Government Plans to Replace WPI with PPI

The Government is planning to replace the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) with the Producer Price Index (PPI) over the next 4-5 years. For now, it has started collecting data and testing the new index.

First, understand these terms:

1) WPI (Wholesale Price Index): Measures inflation based on the prices of goods sold in the wholesale market.

2) PPI (Producer Price Index): Measures changes in prices received by producers (manufacturers) before goods reach wholesalers or consumers. It gives a better picture of inflation at the production stage.

Why is this important?

Inflation indices like CPI and WPI/PPI are used not only to measure inflation but also in important economic indicators such as:

β€’ GDP (Gross Domestic Product) – the total value of goods and services produced in the economy.
β€’ IIP (Index of Industrial Production) – measures the growth of industrial output.

The government has already started using PPI instead of WPI in some GDP and IIP calculations, even though WPI will continue as the official index for a few more years.

Types of Producer Price Index (PPI)

1. Output PPI (OPPI)
Measures the prices that producers receive when they sell their products.
Shows inflation at the factory gate.

2. Input PPI (IPPI)
Measures the cost of raw materials, fuel, and other inputs used in production.
Indicates cost pressures faced by producers.

3. Service PPI (SPPI)
Measures price changes in services such as transport, banking, insurance, and telecommunications.

Ethanol Blending: Why?

βœ“ Ethanol is an alcohol-based biofuel with the chemical formula Cβ‚‚Hβ‚…OH.

βœ“ Ethanol contains 2 carbon atoms per molecule, whereas petrol mainly consists of hydrocarbons containing 8–12 carbon atoms.

βœ“ A higher proportion of ethanol in petrol helps reduce carbon dioxide (COβ‚‚) emissions, making it a cleaner fuel.

βœ“ Ethanol is produced from renewable agricultural feedstocks such as sugarcane, maize, damaged food grains and agricultural residues.

βœ“ Ethanol has a lower calorific value than petrol, meaning it contains less energy per litre.

βœ“ As a result, vehicles running on high ethanol blends may experience around 25–30% lower fuel efficiency (mileage) compared to pure petrol.

βœ“ Ethanol has a high octane number, which improves fuel quality and engine performance by resisting premature combustion (engine knocking).

βœ“ India has advanced its target of 20% ethanol blending (E20) in petrol from 2030 to 2025-26 under the National Biofuel Policy.

Impacts of Rupee Depreciation:

Imports become more expensive: One of the immediate impacts of rupee depreciation is that imports become more expensive. This is because when the rupee depreciates, it takes more rupees to buy the same amount of foreign currency. As a result, businesses and consumers in India have to pay more for imported goods and services, which can lead to higher prices for consumers.

Inflation Increases: When the cost of imports increases, it can lead to inflation.

Impact on foreign investment: A weaker rupee can discourage foreign investors from investing in India. This is because they are more likely to face losses when converting their profits back into their home currency.

Higher borrowing costs: When the rupee depreciates, it can lead to higher borrowing costs for Indian businesses and the government. This is because foreign investors demand higher interest rates to compensate for the increased risk associated with investing in a country with a weaker currency.
